Black Experiences and Contributions
Promoting Public Art @ U of T Mississauga
Welcome, artists.
U of T Mississauga welcomes proposals for a new work of critically engaged sculpture art by a Black Canadian artist for an outdoor, publicly accessible courtyard at the heart of campus. We invite work that will celebrate Black experiences, histories, and contributions in Canada; explore the aspirations and realities of Black achievement nationally and locally; and enable experiential learning opportunities for university students and community. We encourage everyone to explore the call to artists here, which shares details on the project’s themes, budget, and proposal submission process.
The project—launched through collaborations among university staff, faculty, students, and Black communities—will help take another step in realizing U of T’s central values in deed. It enacts commitments of U of T’s Task Force on Anti-Black Racism, which express the urgency of creating more Black-inclusive spaces on campus. It advances priorities of UTM’s Strategic Framework, which work to empower belonging, anti-racism, and artistic creativity. And it extends goals of UTM’s Academic and Site Plans, which lean into our campus’s unique strengths for experiential and place-based learning.
