ISP100 Journal Launch Vol.5 No.1

Writing for University and Beyond: A Journal of First-Year Student Writing at UTM

Year five! Our little journal at the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy has made it through five years. It made it through a pandemic. It evolved through many program and university changes. And it hasn’t missed a beat despite the advent of computers that talk back. When I wrote my first editorial statement, I emphasized that following our first issue would “surely be several annual showcases of student work from our program.” There was no proof of this, but the thought seemed fitting. Now it truly is an annual event. Over the past five years, we have launched five ISP100 editions of the journal.

This has been complemented by three utmONE Scholars issues (with another forthcoming). We have seen a special issue for ISP010(see volume 3.1). We also have a new special edition this year featuring eleven genre analyses from FRE382 (Advanced Language Practice: Written French) that I encourage everyone to explore.

A lot of people have made this journal a reality over the past five years. At least 18 faculty members have contributed to the journal in some way over the years. Over 60 individual students have participated on our editorial team in this time, and many have worked with us year-over-year. 149 students have contributed as authors. Together, everyone has given the journal stability and have pushed it to grow and adapt. Now, as the journal passes to new editorial leadership, it can continue to evolve with our program. The future of the journal is in good hands now that Oguzhan Tekin is taking the lead.

This year’s edition is a fantastic example of everyone coming together to make a great issue. We have 16 papers from assignments in ISP100, followed by the eleven genre analyses from FRE382. Special thanks go to an amazing faculty editorial team: Michael Kaler, Erin Vearncombe, Mustafa Siddiqui, Sheila Batacharya, and Magda Tigchelaar. Our student editorial team has made equally large contributions. Co-editors Sukaina Zaidi, Giorgi Kaikatsishvili, Christina Haddad, and Saira Shaikh helped authors revise their papers for publication. Our Assistant Editors Abigail Najjar, Ryan Nishimura, and Adriana Ojeda Beltran were instrumental during the desk review stage. And our peer review team included Sophia Kim, Leo Johnston, Nadia Khsheibun, Zofia Bookman, Sonia Dami, Christine Erhirhie, Samuel Kamalendran, Ali Mardani, Kyla Wheeler, Andrés Castaneda Gutierrez, Nura Kalender, and Malia Drewery.

As always, what you see here is the result of a lot hard work from faculty and students who have come together to create a beautiful compendium of papers. Thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years. I hope you enjoy reading the papers as much as we have.
I look forward to reading along for many years to come.
