Biography:

Dr. Lorenza Bennardo graduated from Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, and she held post-doctoral appointments in Paris and Geneva, before joining the University of Toronto in 2017.

Dr. Bennardo's main research focuses on Latin Poetry of the 1st century C.E. and the work of the poet Statius, active under the Flavian emperors (69-96 C.E.). She also writes about exegetical practices of late republican and early imperial Rome, exploring how scholarly debates influence the creation of Latin poetry.

With Rebecca Moorman (Boston University), Dr. Bennardo runs the research network Overlooked: Expressions of Poverty and Marginality in the Ancient World. She is also a member of the UofT SSHRC funded project ‘Practices of Commentary’ and coordinates a virtual Flavian reading group gathering scholars and students from Canada, Italy, and the US.

Since arriving at the University of Toronto, Dr. Bennardo has taught a wide range of undergraduate classes both at the St. George campus and at UTM, including introductory and advanced Latin classes, Latin literature in translation, and Roman history and civilization courses.

In the last few years, she has become interested in new approaches to teaching Latin, particularly the use of spoken Latin and Second Language Acquisition methods, which she use in her classrooms.
