The Forensic Science Double Major gives you a taste of all forensics has to offer, with a focus on crime scene investigation- students graduating from this program are typically working towards jobs as:

  • police officer or special constable

  • detective

  • crime scene technician

  • RCMP officer

  • first responder

Our world famous Crime Scene Recreation House hosts crime scene simulations used for training students in investigation techniques, and we offer independent research opportunities to work with faculty members tailored to your own personal interests in criminal investigation and forensic science. Forensic Identification courses are taught by real officers, including retired Detective Contstable Wade Knaap, who was instrumental in the Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka cases of the early 1990s.

This Major Program can only be completed as part of a Double Major Honours BSc Degree, therefore, the Forensic Science Major requirements MUST be completed together with the second science major requirements (preapproved second science Majors are: Biology Major, Chemistry Major, Anthropology Major, Psychology Major).

FSC DOUBLE MAJOR DEGREE HIGHLIGHT: Advanced Forensic Identification
In fourth year, students will get to participate in FSC407, an intense, advanced level course that applies material covered in third year, and held on the UTM Campus over a 2-week period during the summer term, with weekly two hour labs in the fall. Students will experience practical exposure to field and laboratory methods related to evidence recognition, collection and interpretation. Emphasis is be placed on the types of evidence collected, processed, and analyzed by forensic identification specialists. General evidence and small object photography techniques are be an important component of the course.

WHAT HIGH SCHOOL PREP IS NEEDED FOR THE FORENSIC SCIENCE DOUBLE MAJOR DEGREE?

Students need six Grade 12U/M courses including:

  • Grade 12U Biology

  • Grade 12U Chemistry (SCH4U)

  • Grade 12U Advanced Functions (MHF4U)

In addition to the above, Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) and Physics (SPH4U) are highly recommended  for student success. These courses refer to the Ontario high school curriculum. We will accept equivalent courses from other academic systems. For more details, visit the Admissions website:
