Sanctions are imposed when resolving cases of academic misconduct in accordance with the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters. These sanctions can vary depending on factors such as the nature of the offence, the level at which the case is resolved, and on the student’s history of academic misconduct at the University of Toronto.

Departmental
The sanctions that can be imposed at the Departmental Level include but are not limited to a mark of zero on the piece of academic work or a reduction in the mark of the piece of academic work.
Divisional
The sanctions that can be imposed at the Divisional Level for a first offence may include the following:
- A mark of zero on the assignment in question;
- A further reduction from the final grade; and
- An annotation on the transcript (for a specific period of time)
The sanctions that can be imposed at the Divisional Level when there is a prior history of academic misconduct, or when the offence is egregious in nature, may include the following:
- A final grade of zero in the course;
- A suspension from attending the University of Toronto, for a period of up to 24 months; and
- An annotation on the academic transcript (for a specific period of time)

Tribunal
Sanctions at the Tribunal level are typically more severe than what would be imposed at other levels. Review Section 71 of the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters for a list of sanctions imposed at the Tribunal level.

What is a transcript annotation?
An academic transcript annotation is a statement placed on your official academic transcript as part of an academic misconduct sanction. The annotation will remain on your transcript for the period specified in the sanctions and will be automatically removed once that period has ended.
While the annotation is in effect, it will be visible on any official academic transcript you request.
Key Things to Know
- Graduation: An academic transcript annotation will not prevent you from graduating, provided that you meet all applicable graduation requirements.
- University records: Although the annotation is removed from your transcript, the University will retain an internal record of the academic misconduct. If a subsequent allegation of academic misconduct is brought against you, the University may consider your previous history of academic misconduct when determining the appropriate response or sanctions.
