Professor Miles conducts research in two primary areas: morality and human behavior. His work on morality examines things like how morality is learned, and how it influences our emotions and behavior. His work on human behavior draws on cultural sociology and the cognitive sciences to address questions about how people use cognitive processes to translate culture—particularly moral culture—into behavior.
In addition to his work on morality and behavior, Professor Miles has published several articles on how to measure interesting things like moral culture and automatic cognitive processes, and he has dabbled in quantitative research methods including multiple imputation and fixed effect models for longitudinal data. He is a big fan of rigorous methodology, open science, and survey design, and enjoys teaching quantitative methods to undergraduate and graduate students alike.
