The Trip - Japan Winter Reading Week

Approximate Travel Dates: Winter reading week Saturday February 14 - Sunday February 22, 2026. (Plus or minus two days before and after - exact dates and times will be communicated to you at the pre-departure session).

Explore iconic sites like the Asakusa Kannon Temple, a symbol of Tokyo’s spiritual heart, and venture through Akihabara Electric Town, where Japan’s technological innovation meets its pop culture. Delve into martial arts at the Japan Karate Association and the historic Kodokan Dojo, where the essence of karate and judo has been preserved and passed down through generations. You'll end your journey in Okinawa where you'll experience traditional karate mixed with Japanese island life.

Begin your adventure in Tokyo, where the excitement of modern and traditional Japan awaits. Start by exploring the historic Asakusa Kannon Temple (Senso-ji), a place filled with spiritual significance and surrounded by the vibrant Nakamise shopping street. This is your first taste of Tokyo's rich culture and energetic atmosphere.

Dive into the tech haven of Akihabara Electric Town, where the cutting-edge world of electronics and anime comes to life. Whether you’re a fan of pop culture or just love the fast-paced energy of the area, it’s a must-see stop.

For a peaceful escape, visit the tranquil Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a perfect blend of Japanese and Western garden styles. Then, immerse yourself in the history of Japan with a visit to the Meiji Shrine, a sacred space dedicated to Emperor Meiji, where you can take in the serenity of the gardens and learn about Japan’s modern transformation.

To deepen your connection with Japan’s martial arts heritage, visit the renowned Japan Karate Association to experience the discipline of karate firsthand, followed by a visit to the historic Kodokan Dojo to learn about the traditions of judo, both foundational martial arts in Japan’s cultural fabric.

Then you'll head to the sunny island of Okinawa to immerse yourself in traditional karate where you'll learn the movements, philosophy and discipline that have shaped this centuries-old art form.

Whether you're a martial arts enthusiast or a history lover, Japan offers an incredible blend of old and new, with each corner of the country unveiling a new chapter of Japan’s legacy.

Estimated Cost of International Component: CAD $4,200.00 - $4,500.00

What is Included: Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals, in-country activities associated with the course, and trip-cancellation insurance. Funding Available! 

What is NOT Included: Course fees, fees associated with supplemental travel insurance, additional optional tours/activities while abroad, visa applications, medical exams, vaccinations, and any other additional costs. 

Funding 

Bursaries will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need (not linked to OSAP) as shown in your funding request in your UTM Abroad application. Read more about funding here!

If you have applied for a bursary, you will hear back about your bursary application at the same time as your trip application. Once you hear back, you will have about one week to decide whether to participate in the trip based on the bursary awarded. Please review the bursary policies here, and cancellation policies here

Applicants must submit an application for admission into the course to their respective departments and will be required to abide by the corresponding UTM Abroad application requirements and deadlines to participate in the international experience.

Fees must be paid in full by the required deadlines.

To prepare for the trip, students attending will participate in the mandatory pre-departure sessions which occur in person on campus.
