Remembrance Day ceremony to include special guests

The U of T Mississauga community will honour those who have given their lives in the service of their country at its annual Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9.

This year, the ceremony will feature some new participants – the Royal Canadian Legion, the Canadian Forces and army cadets -- and a new location on the plaza between the Instructional Centre and Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre.

Remembrance Day organizer Len Paris, manager of campus police services, said this year’s memorial service is being held in conjunction with the 2012 Crime Prevention Conference. The conference’s keynote speaker, Major Vanessa Hanrahan, is a commanding officer in the Canadian Forces. “Since Remembrance Day is dedicated to members of our armed forces who have died in the line of duty, we feel honoured that the Canadian Forces will participate in our ceremony this year,” said Paris. “This will make our remembrance service that much more special.”

The Nov. 9 service, which will begin at 10:45 a.m., will include opening remarks by Jack Porter of the Royal Canadian Legion in Streetsville, a reading of “In Flanders Fields” by a UTM Students’ Union representative, the laying of wreaths, and closing remarks by Vice-President and Principal Deep Saini and a representative from the Canadian Forces.
