The University of Toronto Mississauga has launched its Boundless campaign, announcing a fundraising goal of $60 million that will transform U of T Mississauga and prepare the campus for its next leap forward as a global innovation leader.

Professor Deep Saini, Vice-President of the University of Toronto and Principal of U of T Mississauga, outlined the campaign’s broad vision at a ceremony in the Instructional Centre at U of T Mississauga. Saini was joined by dignitaries, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders to launch the campaign, which will continue over the next five years.

“From our strategic location at the heart of the western Toronto metropolitan region, to our diverse campus filled with ideas, innovations and a deep-rooted connection to our community, we have accomplished the unimaginable in 45 years,” says Saini. “By harnessing the excellence of our students, faculty and staff, along with the support of our community, U of T Mississauga is on the cusp of a new era in global leadership and societal impact.”

U of T Mississauga has grown dramatically since its establishment in 1967, due in large part to longstanding community partnerships in teaching, research and outreach. The campaign marks a period of transformative growth that will prepare U of T Mississauga to address pressing societal concerns and make a regional and international impact. The campaign’s goal, of which more than $30 million has been secured, will help to foster the innovations and innovators needed to ensure regional prosperity.

The Boundless campaign has already triggered philanthropic support from a broad range of university partners—both individuals and corporations. Prominent philanthropists Terrence Donnelly and Carlo Fidani have made unprecedented gifts to enable the vision of improved regional health care, providing support for the Mississauga Academy of Medicine and making possible the new Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex.

U of T Mississauga is also broadening the study of traditional subjects to include the active engagement of local communities. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Vasu Chanchlani has made a visionary gift of $2 million to create the Centre for South Asian Engagement, which will engage our local South Asian diaspora to advance Canada’s strategic interests in a changing world. Funds will support more student exchanges and more interdisciplinary research in South Asian studies, as well as a lecture series that will feature South Asian scholars, artists and public figures.

Amgen Canada’s generous support of $425,000 will create the Amgen Canada Fellowship in Biotechnology as well as the Amgen Canada Discovery Professorship in Health System Strategy. This investment in innovation will improve health care and foster the next generation of bright thinkers in Canada.

U of T Mississauga’s campaign aspires to connect the campus and community to meet global challenges and prepare global leaders. “The success of this campaign will provide U of T Mississauga’s students and faculty with essential competitive advantages that foster innovation, leadership and global engagement,” says David Palmer, U of T Vice-President, Advancement. “The benefits go beyond the campus—driving regional prosperity and helping the Mississauga community address the important societal challenges of our time.”

With transformational support from local businesses, corporations, friends and alumni, U of T Mississauga aims to support talent and creative ideas that will:

  • Build global fluency
  • Ensure access and opportunity
  • Shape student life and learning
  • Support new knowledge and pioneering research
  • Foster prosperity through invention and innovation
  • Drive breakthroughs in human development and health

U of T Mississauga’s campaign is an integral part of Boundless: The Campaign for the University of Toronto. With a goal of $2 billion, the largest ever for a Canadian university, the Boundless campaign seeks to expand the university’s global impact in key areas of research and prepare students for leadership in an increasingly borderless world. Earlier this year, Boundless surpassed the $1 billion mark, the halfway point of the campaign.
