2019 Celebration of Books fêtes UTM authors
U of T Mississauga’s sixth annual Celebration of Books will take place on Tuesday, April 23. The annual festival is co-hosted by the Research Office and UTM Library and highlights faculty and staff who have authored or edited books published in the past two years.
“It is truly inspiring to see the range of books on display and the impressive scholarship that they represent,” says Professor Kent Moore, vice-principal, research. “This is such a terrific celebration and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to gain some insight on what went into the crafting of these books.”
Many of the 14 authors featured this year will be on hand to read from their works, which explore such diverse topics as the link between Star Wars and religion, the perils of disconnecting from Facebook, political policy along the Canada-U.S. border, modern theatre, art and more.
This year’s reading list also features an e-book, as well as books co-authored by UTM librarians. “While many of our titles are also available in both electronic and traditional formats, this is one of the first books featured that began life as an e-book,” says Shelley Hawrychuk, chief librarian. “We also see three librarians listed as authors this year, which really shows the important role that librarians play in the research environment on this campus.”
Celebration of Books wraps up UTM’s inaugural Researcher Professional Development Day of researcher-focused seminars on data management, innovation and entrepreneurship, funding and awards and communicating research stories to the public.
“Holding these two events together also gives us the chance to talk about the connection between research and professional development, and the results of faculty research,” says Hawrychuk. “There are great authors and great researchers on this campus. It’s important to celebrate that.”
All are welcome at the Celebration of Books, which takes place on Tuesday, April 23 from 3:00 p.m. from 5:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the new North Building. Read more about the books and authors here >
