Collaboration Behind the SIEM Implementation

Behind every successful IT project is a dedicated team bringing expertise, creativity, and collaboration to the table.

From February 2024 to March 2025, the UTM I&ITS team—in partnership with the ISEA team at St. George campus and external cybersecurity provider BlueVoyant—led a critical, campus-wide initiative: implementing a modern Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system.

The goal? To modernize how UTM monitors and responds to potential cybersecurity threats in a decentralized, fast-evolving IT environment. Without an advanced SIEM, our visibility into threats across systems was limited. The stakes were high—but the team rose to the challenge.

Over the course of the project, roughly six team members from UTM worked together to connect on-premises systems to an Azure-hosted SIEM, integrate third-party services, and build the architecture needed for centralized, real-time monitoring and alerts.

But this wasn’t just about upgrading technology—it was about cross-campus collaboration. Regular touchpoints, clear communication, and shared problem-solving were key to overcoming challenges along the way.

Thanks to the team’s efforts, the new SIEM platform now supports more than 17,000 students and 3,400 faculty and staff, significantly strengthening UTM’s ability to detect threats, respond faster, and reduce risk across campus.

Today, UTM operates with a resilient, future-ready security foundation—one that enhances visibility, improves response times, and safeguards our community’s people, data, and systems.
