EC meter (soil and liquid)

Measure soil EC using Hanna Gro Line EC Tester

The Gro Line EC tester measures EC (electrical conductivity) and temperature of soils.  EC range is 0 to 4 mS/cm, with 0.01 mS/cm resolution.  EC accuracy at 25°C and 0.00 to 2.00 mS/cm is ±0.5 mS/cm or ±0.30 mS/cm at 2.00 to 4.00 mS/cm.  Temperature range is 0.0 to 50.0°C at 0.1°C resolution and ±1°C accuracy.

Materials:

  • Gro Line EC tester
  • rinse bottle with distilled water
  • wash beaker to collect dirty water
  • Kim wipes
  • clean gloves
  • working aliquot of calibration standard HI70031 in a beaker

Methods:

  1. Remove black tube that protects the EC probe.
  2. Clean probe by rinsing with distilled water and dry with Kim wipes.
  3. Turn on EC stick by pressing black ON/OFF button under the display.

Calibration

  1. Press and hold ON/OFF button until “OFF” display is replaced by “CAL”.  Display will show “1.41 USE”.
  2. Submerse probe tip 5 cm into HI70031 calibration standard. The probe should be atleast 2.5 cm away from the walls and bottom of the beaker.
  3. Display will show “REC” followed by “Star”.

Measurement

  1. Clean and dry EC probe as in Step 2.
  2. Stick the metal probe 5 to 10 cm into the soil.  Wait until the EC value stops blinking.
  3. Repeat 7 and 8 for other soil samples.
  4. Clean and dry probe.  Store with protection cover over the probe.

Measure EC of solutions using Hanna Edge

EC electrode HI763100 is made for solvents.  This can measure 0 to 199 mS/cm accurately at -5 to 100 °C.

Materials:

  • EC electrode connected to Hanna Edge
  • magnetic stirrer in working aliquots of calibration standards:   84, 1413, 5000, 12800, 80000, 111800 µS/cm
  • cleaning solution
  • wash beaker
  • rinse bottle with distilled water
  • kim wipes
  • hand gloves

Methods:

  1. Connect EC electrode to Hanna Edge tablet.  Turn on Hanna edge.

Prepare the electrode

  1. Remove transparent rubber ring at the tip of the EC electrode.
  2. Rinse electrode with distilled water.  Dry the electrode with Kim wipes and gently shake to remove excess solution.

Calibrate EC electrode using standard

  1. With probe in air, press CAL on the tablet.  Screen will display “WAIT”.
  2. Once screen display changes to “STD”, dip EC electrode into a calibration solution.  Make sure that the electrode is submerged until black line, centered horizontally on the flash and not touching the bottom of the flask.
  3. Screen will display “WAIT” and then “SOL STD”.
  4. Press CFM to save calibration. EC meter is ready to use to measure your well dissolved mixture/solution.

Measure EC of solution

  1. Repeat 3.
  2. Submerge clean electrode to your solution.  The EC of your solution is shown after  “WAIT” is gone on display.
  3. Store clean electrode with plastic rubber on the tip.
