ENV330H5: Experimental Design in Environmental Science
Gain practical experience in field methods, environmental assessment, and integrative problem-solving. Explore terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric sampling and monitoring, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. Practical sessions include outdoor fieldwork on campus and in neighbouring areas.
Explore the role of forests in Earth’s systems through fieldwork in UTM’s forests. Students examine forest ecosystems, environmental change, disturbance, ecosystem services, and management through hands-on measurements and a research project.
Practicum Courses
Work in interdisciplinary teams on term-long projects addressing environmental issues on campus or in the local community. Develop skills in project planning and management, data collection, report writing, and formal presentations. This course is strongly recommended for Specialist and Major students in any Environment program.
Apply environmental science and physical geography knowledge through a part-time, unpaid placement with a conservation authority, municipality, consulting firm, government agency, or other organization. Students must apply online.
Honours Thesis
This course is designed to give students experience in designing and executing an independent senior thesis under the supervision of a faculty member.
To register, students must obtain approval from a faculty supervisor, complete an application form, and submit it to the Academic Counsellor. This course may fulfill field day requirements.

Research Opportunities
Second-year students can earn course credit by working with a professor on an original research project, gaining hands-on experience in research methods and knowledge discovery. Projects may satisfy a Sciences or Social Sciences distribution requirement.
