Departmental Financial Support (Grad Students)

Purpose:

The purpose of this program is to offset the cost of technology required for PhD students to make academic progress (desktop computers, laptops, tablets, peripherals, etc).

Eligibility: PhD students who are UTM affiliated and are supervised by a Biology faculty member (i.e. CSB and EEB PhD students)

Value: The cost of purchase up to $1,000

Duration: One time only

Application Process:

Funding will be made available after acceptance into the PhD program and up to 1 year prior to graduation. Please submit your requests to Mihai Baetu (mihai.baetu@utoronto.ca) with the following information:

Supervisor name
PhD start date
PhD expected graduation

Conditions: Proof of purchase

Disbursement: T4A graduate student grant  

Purpose:

The purpose of this program is to encourage and support the graduate students to actively present their research at an academic conference.

Eligibility: Graduate students enrolled in a thesis-based research stream program (i.e. CSB and EEB MSc and PhD students) who are UTM affiliated and are supervised by a Biology faculty member

Value: up to $1,000

Duration: yearly support (May 1st – April 30)  

Application Process:
Email Mihai Baetu (Mihai.baetu@utoronto.ca) the Conference Grant Application Form before registering to the conference

Conditions:

The student must be a presenter at the conference
For conferences requiring international travel, registration with the Safety Abroad Office at least 1 month prior to departure is mandatory

Disbursement: Expense reimbursement following the UofT Policy

Purpose:

The purpose of this program is to encourage and support the graduate students to participate in professional development, training or educational activities (attending professional development courses, workshops, or summer schools)

Eligibility: Graduate students enrolled in a thesis-based research stream program (i.e. CSB and EEB MSc and PhD students) who are UTM affiliated and are supervised by a Biology faculty member

Value: up to $500

Duration: yearly support (May 1st – April 30)  

Application Process:
Email Mihai Baetu (Mihai.baetu@utoronto.ca) the Training Grant Application Form before registering to the course

Conditions:
For courses requiring international travel, registration with the Safety Abroad Office at least 1 month prior to departure is mandatory

Disbursement: Expense reimbursement following the UofT Policy

Purpose:

The purpose of this program is to support the graduate students and their supervisors defraying the cost of publication fees for papers that require open access. This support is made available for graduate students for their first time publishing a paper where they are listed as first author.

Eligibility: Graduate students enrolled in a thesis-based research stream program (i.e. CSB and EEB MSc and PhD students) who are UTM affiliated and are supervised by a Biology faculty member

Value: up to $1,000

Duration: One time only

Application Process:
Notify Mihai Baetu (mihai.baetu@utoronto.ca) when the fees become due

Conditions:
The graduate student must be the first author for the published paper

Disbursement:
The funds (up to $1,000) will be transferred to the PI account where the open access fees were initially charged. Alternatively, the support can be disbursed though an expenses reimbursement process following the UofT Policy, if the fee was paid out of the pocket through a personal credit card.

Purpose:

The purpose of this program is to provide the opportunity to celebrate the academic achievements of every graduate student in the Department of Biology, culminating with their graduation.

Eligibility: Graduate students enrolled in a thesis-based research stream program (i.e. CSB and EEB MSc and PhD students) who are UTM affiliated and are supervised by a Biology faculty member

Value: up to $100 per graduate student

Duration: One time only

Application Process:
Notify Mihai Baetu (mihai.baetu@utoronto.ca) when celebration activities are planned

Conditions:
The funding will be made available once the student graduation is confirmed.
Costs for celebratory activities have incurred (group meals, gifts, etc)

Disbursement:
It is expected that the PI/Faculty member will organize the activities within their research group/lab incurring expenditures through various ways. The celebration fund (up to $100) will be transferred to the PI account once the student graduation is confirmed.
