Nicole Danesi

Nicole Danesi (HBA 2016 UTM)
Senior Manager, Public Relations and Unite for Change, Canada Helps

About Me

I am interested in being a mentor to help students at UTM by sharing my experience and knowledge when it comes to networking and starting your career. As someone who has graduated just over five years ago, I want to share my recent experience with the goal of helping others.

I’m looking for a mentee who isn't afraid to ask questions, someone who takes the initiative and shares clears objectives as to what they are hoping to get out of the mentor/mentee relationship.

I know how hard it is to navigate the start of your career. With a few years under my belt, I want to do what I can to help. I have built a network of contacts particularly in the non-profit and marketing space and can help make introductions, help with job searches, and provide general advice based on my experiences so far. I can also help provide advice and guidance when it comes to seeking new opportunities and getting involved with organizations.

I hope my mentee will gain the confidence to try new things, develop their self-confidence, and understand that this is an exciting time with many possibilities ahead of them.

Aside from my career experience thus far, I can also provide guidance when it comes to avoiding burnout, scheduling to make time for yourself, and goal setting. I am also really interested in politics, city building, leadership, and current events.

Ray Khan

Ray Khan (HBA)
Digital Producer, Jam3 / Media.Monks

About Me

As a DEM / CCIT / PWC graduate, I always felt like I had a whole world of opportunities ahead of me. That quickly became a challenge for me as I had to understand better and decide what I wanted to do, and I haven’t even begun exploring what I did and didn’t like. Over the course of the last seven years, I have explored everything from advertising to design to technology to digital marketing to running my own business. I have made my fair share of mistakes and achieved just as many successes, which gave me confidence in guiding the next generation as they pursue their careers.

Things I have helped with mentees in the past include professional communication, resume writing, portfolio creation, navigating post-secondary education options, how to effectively network, and more. After spending some time with me and leveling up the basics, I help my mentees get connected with relevant professionals who can advise them further and potentially even refer them to their first jobs.

As much as I have to offer to any mentee, I can also equally say that much of what I share will rely on that mentee's self-discipline to see things through. I have mentored many people, but the advice was not always followed out of complacency or lack of drive. Mentorship takes proactivity, passion and focus. When that effort is wasted, it's a real shame. If you have the will and the energy to take on, embody and see through advice, I'd love to help you. What I hope you will gain from working together is a more focused career path with resolute confidence, the ability to network effectively, discover opportunities to build relevant and meaningful experiences, and how to maximize the time and resources you have available to you.

If you are interested in working in advertising, interactive technology, SaaS tech, product management, any kind of agency, graphic/web/UX design, or starting your own company, as I have, there's a lot of experience and wisdom I can share with you.

Francesca Saraco

Francesca Saraco (HBA, MA)
Senior Account Client Manager, X (formerly Twitter)

About Me

Since I first discovered the Internet at seven years old I've always been fascinated by the ways humans connect and share online. This curiosity led me to double majoring in CCIT and Psychology at UTM and also completing a master's degree in communication studies at Wilfred Laurier University. I then went on to pursue a career in social media on the agency side before transitioning into tech.

I'm interested in being a mentor so that I can share my journey with others in the hopes of helping them both personally and professionally. The road from university to professional life has been far from easy and I'm hoping some of my stumblings can help someone along their way. I also lost both my parents very suddenly over the course of five years as I was first working and hope that I could also support students going through personal challenges.

Other than work I'm someone who loves novelty, movement, culture and of course, delicious food.

Carmen Cadeau

Carmen Cadeau (HBA, MT)
Course and Educational Technology Assistant, University of Toronto

About Me

When I graduated from the University of Toronto Mississauga, my work experience was limited and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Through trial and error, volunteering, informational interviews, and self-reflection, I learned how to navigate career uncertainty with resilience and want to help others do the same.

Mentorship can be a powerful tool for learning and growth. While completing my Master of Teaching, I was mentored by four different teachers. Not only did I learn how to handle the challenges of working in a classroom on a daily basis, but their guidance transformed my approach to education.

Empowering students is at the heart of my work whether I am working inside or outside of the classroom. Currently, I support first-year U of T Engineering students as a Course and Educational Technology Assistant. Prior to this, I worked as an Elementary School Teacher at the Peel District School Board for five years and as a Career Advisor, coaching U of T students on career exploration, job search strategies, and graduate school. Peter Wong

Peter Wong (HBSc, CPA, CMA)
Financial Information & Processing Support Manager, University of Toronto Mississauga

About Me

I graduated with an HBSc in Genetics and Economics in 2004. Upon graduation, I was uncertain about my future career choices as the direct options related to my field of study were not what I wanted to have a career in. Given the case, through countless discussions with pivotal people and trial and error, I discovered a career path in accounting. I eventually obtained my Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and built my career in the accounting field, specializing in internal audit.

As a mentor, I enjoy talking to my mentees about my broad areas of study and how it led to a totally different career path from what I had imagined when I first started university. I like to ask questions, guide the mentee in their life/career choices, and provide insights into the working world, where many of the key competencies are soft skills that are difficult to practice and refine. The knowledge that I can share with my mentees includes providing guidance on picking or transitioning to a career path, developing people skills, and navigating the issues and conflicts that occur in the workplace. With the mentorship program, I also want to learn from my mentee about all the new, trending, and interesting things that are happening in the world today. Ennio Palombizio

Ennio Alessandro Palombizio (HBSc, MA)
Senior Lead Economist, Tourism Branch at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada

About Me

I remember my academic years. Apart from being nervous about assignments, exams or whether I was doing enough outside of school, there was that looming reality of “What’s next?” Had I made the right choices? Was I on the right path? And were there any regrets?

While I may not have all the answers, I am hoping to instill a sense of calm and provide frank and honest discussion with those who are willing to listen, talk and ask questions. I’m not here to be a crutch, but I will provide support and guidance to the best of my ability.

I’m willing to adjust to any style of interaction that will make this experience the best it can be for you. Formal? Informal? Teacher/Student? Or just two friends? Whatever makes this a comfortable and open environment, because communication is the key.

Joanna Rutkowska

Joanna Rutkowska (HBA) Program Coordinator
Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services

Looking to Mentor: Upper-year students who are interested in learning more about working as a public servant with the Government of Ontario or who feel lost and are struggling to decide their next steps after UTM.

About Me:

Joanna works in the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services (MCCSS) at the Social Assistance Strategy and Transformation Branch, where she coordinates governance, supports management and Directors, completes financial responsibilities, and sits on the SASTB Anti-Black Racism Branch Committee. She is also the Co-Chair of the TOPS (Tomorrow Ontario Public Service) London Chapter where the team fosters an inclusive culture of engagement, learning, leadership, and professional development in the Ontario Public Service.

Her OPS journey started with the Ministry of the Attorney General at the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee. She worked in estates and the Application Screening Unit where she reviewed applications from family members looking to replace the PGT as the client’s statutory guardian of property. Her passion in helping vulnerable members of society allowed her to transition to MCCSS.

This journey would not be possible without contributing to the UTM Alumni Mentorship Program when Joanna was in her fourth year. Joanna’s alumni mentor worked in MCCSS and encouraged her to apply to the summer student opportunity with the provincial government.

Additionally, Joanna worked as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel and led a group of UTM students on campus who were mentors to mentees. Joanna was and continues to be passionate about mentorship and believes mentorship can give guidance to anyone who is confused with what they want to do with their future, it can prompt you to think outside the box, and it will help folks gain the extra confidence they sometimes need. Joanna is interested in working with anyone who has an open mind, someone who may have questions about their future and doesn’t know where to go next, and someone interested in helping and working with vulnerable members of society.

Joanna believes a lot can be done with gratitude, an open mind, and with a dash of humour. She enjoys arts and crafts, comedies, lifting weights, and spending time with family and friends.

Melvin Sert

Melvin Sert (HBSc, MSc)
Psychologist, Correctional Service Canada, Government of Canada

About Me

Even though I knew I wanted to become a psychologist when I was 10 years old, figuring out how to become one, especially as a first-generation immigrant was not an easy process. After completing my Bachelor’s degree at UTM, I decided to pursue my graduate studies abroad and moved to Europe. I obtained a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. During my graduate studies, I was awarded the Erasmus Traineeship funding from the European Commission and completed my internship year in England and Scotland. As I learned to navigate various educational systems in multiple countries, I quickly realized you do not always need to follow the traditional path to reach your educational and career goals. As a mentor, I would love to share my experiences with others and support the next generation of students in their career journey.

Now, as a Clinical/Forensic Psychologist with Correctional Service Canada (CSC), I provide mental health services to federally incarcerated inmates residing in a maximum-security institution. I feel extremely lucky to work in a high-paced environment where there is truly never a dull moment. In my current role, I provide psychotherapy and crisis interventions, conduct suicide risk assessments, develop individualized treatment plans, administer psychological tests and diagnose mental health disorders. I also conduct psychological risk assessments to assess offenders’ general, violent or sexual risk of reoffending and prepare reports to communicate my findings and recommendations to the Parole Board of Canada, to ensure public safety. Alongside my role with CSC, I run my own private practice, Mayfair Psychology, where I provide virtual psychological services to individuals living in areas with limited access to mental health resources.

As a mentor, I would like to share my experiences with other students who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of mental health or corrections.

Jodi Younger

Jodi Younger (BSc, MASc, MHSc)
Vice President, Patient Care and Quality, St. Joseph’s Health Care

About Me

I love mentoring because it keeps me connected to the next generation of health leaders and providers, and keeps me learning and growing. I see mentorship as an investment in developing excellent people to help our system improve as it needs to. I benefitted from formal mentorship throughout my career. It has helped me take risks, learn new things and grow professionally and personally. I now aspire to do that for others.

I am looking for a mentee who is interested in a career path that aligns to health services and health leadership. I aspire for my mentees to be open to suggestions, comfortable in making new connections and leveraging those relationships to help them grow. With past mentees I have introduced them to leaders, decision-makers and funders in high levels of government, hospital operations and health system leadership. Networking is so critical, because that is often where opportunities arise. In my experience, people are very generous with their time if you have a relationship that gets your, 'foot in the door'. However, you can't waste that introduction by not following through!

I can also provide guidance and support in decision-making for next steps with school. With a plethora of options for post-graduate training, I have supported mentees in navigating through options and have connected them to individuals working in fields of interest to explore further. My academic role aligns to teaching and coaching aspiring and early career health leaders, and I have a depth of knowledge about pathways to leadership that I think can be beneficial.

It is up to you to determine what you want and need from the Alumni Mentorship Program, but I hope I am able to help paint a picture of the bigger health system to support your decisions about what path you might take and what your academic next steps might need to be.

Lastly, I hope that, for those who aspire to leadership roles, I can help lay a foundation of what strong leadership looks like and how to demonstrate your passion and skills as an emerging leader to support academic and career success.

Ryan Duquette

Ryan Duquette (HBA, MSc)
Partner, National Lead of Digital Forensics, MNP

About Me

I have been a UTM Alumni Mentor since 2000. I also mentor previous students of mine and individuals in my industry.

Being a mentor gives me an opportunity to teach the lessons I have learned over the years and to learn from those that I mentor. But being a mentor is about more than just teaching. It’s about developing leadership and communication skills and promoting self-reflection in me and in those I mentor. It also allows me to be an advocate for my mentees.

I am looking for a mentee with whom I can have an open dialogue, someone who will respect my time (i.e. not show up late), is willing to put in the work, and is able to contribute to the mentor-mentee relationship.

I find the best mentoring relationships are when we don’t discuss a specific career or the skills needed for a specific career. The best relationships have focused on life skills, leadership skills, and more. I feel that I add value to the mentee’s experience by pushing them to think about both their lives and careers. My many years of work experience in both the public and private sector, and years of teaching at UTM gives me a well-rounded skill set that adds value to the experience I can give to mentees.

My hope with any mentoring relationship is that my mentee will develop self-awareness, and a better understanding of their career and life goals and also that this professional relationship develops into one that could last for many years (beyond the formal mentoring program).

Having been an immigrant and a mature student I would love to help current students who are in a similar situation by sharing my experience and helping them figure out the next steps in their situation. Maria Reyes

Maria Reyes (HBA)
Senior Merger & Acquisitions Analyst, AIG

About Me

Mentorship has always been an experience that I value. I originally participated in the UTM Alumni Mentorship Program as a student mentee in undergrad. I remember feeling the challenges of learning in school while thinking of a career that would fit me. I considered areas like further education, law school, or going straight to work after graduation. I recall vividly discovering during my internship at a law firm that law school wasn’t for me. I was fortunate enough to be paired with a mentor who shared her insight and network to push me on the path I’m currently in.

My journey has always been non-linear. I ended up in an industry (business / mergers and acquisitions) in spite of never really having a business background. That being said, I believe my experience can help you by giving different perspectives towards your professional goals. My objective as a mentor is to help you discover a career that may be of interest to you; and/or nurturing your goals towards the trajectory you would like to be in by leveraging my experiences and network. I’m excited to be a part of this program and I look forward to further chatting!

I’m also help advise and coach with the Law Society of Ontario’s Coach and Advisor Network, so I speak with new lawyers on immigration practice and procedure, professional responsibility, and other issues that are unique to solo practice. I taught "Family Class Applications" in January 2022 in Queen's University's Graduate Program in Immigration and Citizenship Law, and will teach Ethics and Professional Responsibility in fall 2022.

About Me

I’m interested in being a mentor because I enjoy working one-on-one with students and sharing my experiences with them. It’s incredible to play even a small part in someone’s personal and professional development and life journey.

I’m looking for a mentee who is proactive, passionate, and eager to learn.

As a mentor, I would like to add value to my mentee’s experience by facilitating introductions to industry professionals, providing insights into the industries that I have belonged to over the years, and being a sounding board for my mentee.

As an expat in Denmark a decade ago, I experienced loneliness and sometimes feelings of isolation. I am open to discussing the strategies I used, such as journaling, to navigate that period. I hope my mentee will feel seen, heard, and supported in our mentor-mentee relationship.

I can’t wait to meet you!

Erick McKinlay

Erick McKinlay (HBA, MA, JD)
Lawyer, Family Law

About Me

I believe one of the best ways to learn about a profession is by speaking with people already practicing in that profession. I am interested in mentoring and coaching individuals who are willing to learn. I am happy to coach and engage with students, recent university graduates, and young professionals interested in studying law. I am also interested in mentoring University of Toronto students and graduates who are progressing through their education or who have recently graduated.

During my graduating year, I took part in the Career Centre's coaching program. Through the program, I was paired with a criminal lawyer practicing in Peel. Serving as a coach and mentor provides me with the opportunity to give back.

My learning experience at the University of Toronto in Mississauga enriched my life and provided a foundation for future learning.

Hana Tariq

Hana Tariq (BSc, LLB)
Associate Lawyer, Bisceglia & Associates Professional Corporation

About Me

I am interested in becoming a mentor as I myself was a mentee during my time at UTM, and I greatly benefitted from having mentors who were able to provide insight into the legal profession.

Over the years, I have mentored students in an informal capacity, from undergraduate students considering law as a career, to law students looking for career guidance.

It is interesting to see how undergraduate education and legal training has evolved over the years. It is also interesting to “dispel” some of the myths about practicing law. Yes, the hours can be long and the work challenging, but it is possible, in fact encouraged, to maintain interests outside of one’s profession.

I am looking for a mentee who is considering a career in law, and is curious about what the profession entails. I have been in practice for 12 years, and can provide guidance in relation to the law school application process, employment opportunities during law school/articles, and practice after graduation.

From this relationship, I hope my mentee gains a better understanding of the legal profession and is able to make an informed decision as to whether they would like to pursue law as a career.

Mohammad Amin

Mohammad Amin (BCom)
Consultant, Omnia AI, Deloitte Canada

About Me

Hi there! My name is Mohammad and I graduated from UTM’s Bachelor of Commerce program in 2017. UTM really shaped my character and set me up for success in so many ways. My involvement on committees and clubs helped build my soft skills, and as soon you’ll learn, these soft skills become some of your most valuable and marketable assets.

I currently work in downtown Toronto as a Consultant in the Analytics field. I love mentoring because I immensely enjoy meeting new people. Also, nothing beats being able to help others more than investing in their personal development and success. I only graduated 4 years ago and so I remember how job search can be a very large stressor. There's so many ins and outs of job search, learning them by yourself isn't that simple with all other university and personal life commitments. I believe mentorship can make a huge difference in helping launch a great career - I know I wouldn't be where I am without my mentors.

In terms of mentees, I’ve worked with people from all sorts of backgrounds and skills. All I ask is that you put in the effort. I can show you the road but only you can walk down the path.

Naina Gazula

Naina Gazula (BBA)
Senior Manager, Management Consulting, KPMG Canada

About Me

During my time at UTM, I was incredibly lucky to be mentored and supported by an ecosystem of wonderful people. Their advice and perspective gave me the confidence to navigate the unknowns and complexities of kickstarting the early years of my professional career.

Since then, I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to formally and informally mentor students (at UTM) as well as new immigrants, refugees, and many others (through TRIEC) who are at various points in their career. Giving back has been a constant theme in my life and it has taken many different forms – mentoring the current and future generation of thought leaders is one among them.

Mentoring allows me to not only give back what I have learned and lift others up, but it also helps me in continuing to embrace diversity – be it diversity of thought, generation, experience, or culture. Mentoring is a two-way window that enables learning from one another openly – it has helped me be a better teammate, leader, and support system for those around me.

I am looking for a mentee who is committed, proactive, and organized – traits that will help them succeed no matter what the starting point is for their career. I would expect the mentee to demonstrate these attributes in our discussions but also in the work they do leading up to our touchpoints – this is a great opportunity for students to build a productive and potentially long-term relationship with industry professionals, who can help be a learning accelerator for their careers.

We no longer operate in a world where we always need to know “what we want to be when we grow up” or expect there to be only one answer to that question. There’s an abundance of opportunity to learn, to make a difference, and to pick up new problems when we have solved the old ones. As someone who has learned this lesson as a new graduate and still continues to learn it every day, it would be my pleasure to help our third- or fourth-year students navigate through that. More tactically, I would also be happy to support mentees with deciding between working in industry vs. consulting, how to network effectively, recruitment preparation, and sharpening critical soft skills for the workforce.
