Nicole Danesi

Nicole Danesi (HBA 2016 UTM)
Senior Manager, Strategic Communications and Brand, Canada Helps

About Me

I am the Senior Manager, Strategic Communications and Brand at CanadaHelps, Canada’s largest online donation and fundraising platform which has raised more than $3 billion for registered Canadian charities across the country over its 24-year history.

As a Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (CCIT) student, I joined CanadaHelps as an intern while enrolled in my fourth year internship course (CCT410) when there was a team of approximately 20 staff members working at the organization. Nearly a decade later, I have watched CanadaHelps grow to a team of 100. Now, I lead media strategy, communications, and brand at CanadaHelps and often appear on television and radio as a spokesperson for the organization.

I have mentored several students through the University of Toronto Mississauga’s alumni department over the years and have enjoyed the opportunity to connect and support students on their journey to discover their professional interests, while dreaming of what their future holds. As someone with more than eight years of full-time work experience, I enjoy opening up about my knowledge and experience to help students kick-start their career, and can share what a day-in-the-life of a professional in a marketing, communications, public relations, media strategy, and brand role involves. I can also speak to networking tactics, how to learn on the job, how to gain mentorship opportunities, and more. Finally, I can help students who are interested in a career in the non-profit sector or marketing explore the vast number of niche roles that are rolled up in either field (e.g. search engine optimization, social media marketing, email marketing, media activations, corporate social responsibility, fundraising, etc.). I am looking for a mentee who isn't afraid to ask questions, has professional aspirations, takes initiative, comes prepared to touchpoints, and shares clear objectives about what they would like to learn. Through this professional relationship, I hope my mentee will gain confidence to try new things and understand how exciting this moment in their life is with so many possibilities ahead of them.

In addition to my professional experience, I can also provide guidance about avoiding burnout and goal setting. I am also interested in politics, city building, leadership, and current events. If you are interested in learning more, visit my LinkedIn.

Ray Khan

Ray Khan (HBA)
Senior Manager of Design & Experience Production, Simplii Financial

About Me

As a DEM / CCIT / PWC graduate, I always felt like I had a whole world of opportunities ahead of me. That quickly became a challenge for me as I had to understand better and decide what I wanted to do, and I haven’t even begun exploring what I did and didn’t like. Over the course of the last eight years, I have explored everything from advertising to design to technology to digital marketing to running my own business. I have made my fair share of mistakes and achieved just as many successes, which gave me confidence in guiding the next generation as they pursue their careers.

Things I have helped with mentees in the past include professional communication, resume writing, portfolio creation, navigating post-secondary education options, how to effectively network, and more. After spending some time with me and leveling up the basics, I help my mentees get connected with relevant professionals who can advise them further and potentially even refer them to their first jobs.

As much as I have to offer to any mentee, I can also equally say that much of what I share will rely on that mentee's self-discipline to see things through. I have mentored many people, but the advice was not always followed out of complacency or lack of drive. Mentorship takes proactivity, passion and focus. When that effort is wasted, it's a real shame. If you have the will and the energy to take on, embody and see through advice, I'd love to help you. What I hope you will gain from working together is a more focused career path with resolute confidence, the ability to network effectively, discover opportunities to build relevant and meaningful experiences, and how to maximize the time and resources you have available to you.

If you are interested in working in advertising, interactive technology, SaaS tech, product management, any kind of agency, graphic/web/UX design, or starting your own company, as I have, there's a lot of experience and wisdom I can share with you.

Francesca Saraco

Account Executive, Amazon, Consumer Packaged Goods

Social Media Instructor, BrainStation

About Me

Since I first discovered the Internet at 7 years old I've always been fascinated by the ways humans connect and share online. This curiosity led me to double majoring in CCIT and Psychology at UTM and also completing a master's degree in communication studies at Wilfred Laurier University. I then went on to pursue a career in social media on the agency side before transitioning into tech.

I'm interested in being a mentor so that I can share my journey with others in the hopes of helping them both personally and professionally. The road from university to professional life has been far from easy and I'm hoping some of my stumbling can help someone along their way. I also lost both my parents very suddenly over the course of five years as I was first working and hope that I could also support students going through personal challenges.

Other than work I'm someone who loves novelty, movement, culture and of course, delicious food.

Carmen Cadeau

Carmen Cadeau (HBA, MT)
Student Development Officer, University of Toronto Mississauga

About Me

When I graduated from the University of Toronto Mississauga, my work experience was limited and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Through trial and error, volunteering, informational interviews, and self-reflection, I learned how to navigate career uncertainty with resilience and want to help others do the same.

Mentorship is a powerful tool for learning and growth. Drawing from my own experience being mentored by four teachers during my Master of Teaching, I now apply those lessons by actively mentoring students in my role, guiding them through challenges and supporting their academic and professional development.

Currently, I am a Student Development Officer for the Experiential Education Unit where I support students in the UTM Co-op Internship Program through personalized career support. I guide students through job search strategies, industry research, and work-integrated learning opportunities, while also supporting overall program administration and student success. Prior, I worked in course administration, educational technology, and have teaching experience across public schools, higher education, and museum education settings. These experiences solidified my dedication to student-centered education and shaped my approach to mentorship.

Senior Manager Data Management, National Football League (NFL)

About Me

I believe in continuous learning, regardless of the setting. As a firm believer that academics are only part of a holistic education, I strive to understand the world around me through meaningful engagement and understanding of all experiences I come across. During my time at UTM, I learned the skills I needed to view the world through this lens, but it was only after I graduated that I learned how to harness it to my benefit. Data Analytics is my bread and Data Governance is my butter. I didn’t learn these things at UTM, but I got them because of my experience there!

It is because of this that I chose to become a Mentor. While I work in Finance, my line of work is such that my skills are highly sought-after and transferable. I previously worked in Retail and Technology. My mentee and I will work towards achieving that agility for their career as well, no matter what you studied in school (hint: ask more of “Why” and less of “What”). I hope I can help them develop the confidence needed to succeed in the workplace and for them to see things in a positive light. I was not active in student clubs at UTM and I did not have a perfect GPA upon graduating, so I understand how difficult it is to find that first job or even get an acknowledgment regarding an application. I want to do what I can to assist with the process and hopefully help my mentee use the experience to learn and grow.

I migrated from the Philippines halfway through high school. I am sure anyone would agree that that is one of the worst times in your life to start anew, and I was put in a position to develop tenacity earlier in life than some. In my spare time, I like watching and playing basketball, reviewing every restaurant I visit on Google Maps and going down the path towards becoming an amateur pianist.

Peter Wong

Peter Wong (HBSc, CPA, CIA)
Financial Information & Processing Support Manager, University of Toronto Mississauga

About Me

I graduated with an HBSc in Genetics and Economics in 2004. Upon graduation, I was uncertain about my future career choices as the direct options related to my field of study were not what I wanted to have a career in. Given the case, through countless discussions with pivotal people and trial and error, I discovered a career path in accounting. I eventually obtained my Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and built my career in the accounting field, specializing in internal audit.

As a mentor, I enjoy talking to my mentees about my broad areas of study and how it led to a totally different career path from what I had imagined when I first started university. I like to ask questions, guide the mentee in their life/career choices, and provide insights into the working world, where many of the key competencies are soft skills that are difficult to practice and refine. The knowledge that I can share with my mentees includes providing guidance on picking or transitioning to a career path, developing people skills, and navigating the issues and conflicts that occur in the workplace. With the mentorship program, I also want to learn from my mentee about all the new, trending, and interesting things that are happening in the world today. I am interested in working with both students and recent graduates.

Jodi Younger

Jodi Younger (BSc, MASc, MHSc)
Vice President, Patient Care and Quality, St. Joseph’s Health Care

About Me

I love mentoring because it keeps me connected to the next generation of health leaders and providers, and keeps me learning and growing. I see mentorship as an investment in developing excellent people to help our system improve as it needs to. I benefitted from formal mentorship throughout my career. It has helped me take risks, learn new things and grow professionally and personally. I now aspire to do that for others.

I am looking for a mentee who is interested in a career path that aligns to health services and health leadership. I aspire for my mentees to be open to suggestions, comfortable in making new connections and leveraging those relationships to help them grow. With past mentees I have introduced them to leaders, decision-makers and funders in high levels of government, hospital operations and health system leadership. Networking is so critical, because that is often where opportunities arise. In my experience, people are very generous with their time if you have a relationship that gets your, 'foot in the door'. However, you can't waste that introduction by not following through!

I can also provide guidance and support in decision-making for next steps with school. With a plethora of options for post-graduate training, I have supported mentees in navigating through options and have connected them to individuals working in fields of interest to explore further. My academic role aligns to teaching and coaching aspiring and early career health leaders, and I have a depth of knowledge about pathways to leadership that I think can be beneficial.

It is up to you to determine what you want and need from the Alumni Mentorship Program, but I hope I am able to help paint a picture of the bigger health system to support your decisions about what path you might take and what your academic next steps might need to be.

Lastly, I hope that, for those who aspire to leadership roles, I can help lay a foundation of what strong leadership looks like and how to demonstrate your passion and skills as an emerging leader to support academic and career success.

Maria Reyes

Maria Reyes (HBA)
Merger & Acquisitions Analyst, AIG

About Me

Mentorship has always been an experience that I value. I originally participated in the UTM Alumni Mentorship Program as a student mentee in undergrad. I remember feeling the challenges of learning in school while thinking of a career that would fit me. I considered areas like further education, law school, or going straight to work after graduation. I recall vividly discovering during my internship at a law firm that law school wasn’t for me. I was fortunate enough to be paired with a mentor who shared her insight and network to push me on the path I’m currently in.

My journey has always been non-linear. I ended up in an industry (business / mergers and acquisitions) in spite of never really having a business background. That being said, I believe my experience can help you by giving different perspectives towards your professional goals. My objective as a mentor is to help you discover a career that may be of interest to you; and/or nurturing your goals towards the trajectory you would like to be in by leveraging my experiences and network. I’m excited to be a part of this program and I look forward to further chatting!

Jeff Landry (HBA)
A/Sergeant, 11 Division, Peel Regional Police

After graduating from UTM, I looked for my place in the world and at times felt a little lost. I want to help provide some guidance or reassurance that UTM has provided their students with the tools and experiences that will help you find your path.

Personally, I wanted to feel like I was a contributing member to society and that what I did mattered. As a police officer, I have had that opportunity ten-fold. My career has taken me to one of the most successful homicide units in North America where I can use the critical thinking skills that I acquired in my time at UTM.

During my career. I have been mentored by some very smart and driven people. They have pushed me to recognize my capabilities and I would like to do the same for others. I am currently involved in a mentorship program in the homicide unit for junior officers identified as future investigators but I would also like to work with people outside of policing.

I was born and raised in the diverse community of Brampton where I welcomed the exposure to diverse culture and community. I currently coach youth hockey. I have volunteered with Big Brothers and Sisters of Peel, VON, United Way, Toys for Tots and many other initiatives.

On a side note, policing is a rapidly changing environment that has many misconceptions surrounding it. If this program can help me facilitate an exchange of ideas and promote the recruitment of smart, diverse and educated representatives to consider a policing career than that will be a bonus.

  • In his previous role at Peel Regional Police, Jeff investigated homicides and missing persons within the Peel Region. Sometimes, he was required to attend court and take the stand to provide statements and evidence.
  • He frequently uses the skills he learned in his history courses at UTM to look at past events, take written and oral statements and use data to prove this information true or false.
  • Jeff spent his summers as a student working for Bell Canada to help pay for the cost of school. He continued to work for Bell after graduation until he decided to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a police officer.

Justin Marra (HBA)
Detective Constable, Uniform Recruiting Outreach Officer, Peel Regional Police

About Me

I attended UTM from 2010 to 2015 while pursuing a double major in History of Religion and Classical Civilizations. During that time, I also played football for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues where I had the chance to mentor incoming student athletes.

Upon graduating, I realized that transitioning into the "real world" outside of sports and school was difficult. This realization inspired me to start informally mentor other student-athletes going through similar transitions. In 2018, the Toronto Varsity Blues Football Mentorship Program was founded, which provides mentorship to football players and recent graduates to help with the transition both out of sports and into the workforce.

Mentorship has always been a source of fulfillment, and I genuinely enjoy helping people discover and achieve their potential. I look forward to working with students who are seeking advice and insight into pursuing a career in law enforcement with Peel Regional Police.

I’m looking for a mentee who is proactive, passionate, and eager to learn.

As a mentor, I would like to add value to my mentee’s experience by facilitating introductions to industry professionals, providing insights into the industries that I have belonged to over the years, and being a sounding board for my mentee.

Mentoring is my way of giving back to UTM and to pass my knowledge, life experience and tips to those interested in starting their law journey.

I also help advise and coach with the Law Society of Ontario’s Coach and Advisor Network, so I speak with new lawyers on immigration practice and procedure, professional responsibility, and other issues that are unique to solo practice. I taught "Family Class Applications" in January 2022 in Queen's University's Graduate Program in Immigration and Citizenship Law, and "Ethics and Professional Responsibility" in fall 2022. Erick McKinlay

Erick McKinlay (HBA, MA, JD)
Associate Family Law Lawyer, Progressive Legal Solutions

About Me

I believe one of the best ways to learn about a profession is by speaking with people already practicing in that profession. I am interested in mentoring and coaching individuals who are willing to learn. I am happy to coach and engage with students, recent university graduates, and young professionals interested in studying law. I am also interested in mentoring University of Toronto students and graduates who are progressing through their education or who have recently graduated.

During my graduating year, I took part in the Career Centre's coaching program. Through the program, I was paired with a criminal lawyer practicing in Peel. Serving as a coach and mentor provides me with the opportunity to give back.

My learning experience at the University of Toronto in Mississauga enriched my life and provided a foundation for future learning.

Hana Tariq

Hana Tariq (BSc, LLB)
Associate Lawyer, Bisceglia & Associates Professional Corporation

About Me

I am interested in becoming a mentor as I myself was a mentee during my time at UTM, and I greatly benefitted from having mentors who were able to provide insight into the legal profession.

Over the years, I have mentored students in an informal capacity, from undergraduate students considering law as a career, to law students looking for career guidance.

It is interesting to see how undergraduate education and legal training has evolved over the years. It is also interesting to “dispel” some of the myths about practicing law. Yes, the hours can be long and the work challenging, but it is possible, in fact encouraged, to maintain interests outside of one’s profession.

I am looking for a mentee who is considering a career in law, and is curious about what the profession entails. I have been in practice for 15 years, and can provide guidance in relation to the law school application process, employment opportunities during law school/articles, and practice after graduation.

From this relationship, I hope my mentee gains a better understanding of the legal profession and is able to make an informed decision as to whether they would like to pursue law as a career.

Diana Safina

Diana Safina (BCom)
Director of Client Success, Rise

About Me

I’m passionate about creating positive social change and building genuine connections. As the Director of Client Success at Rise, I design programs that support social inclusion and economic empowerment, ensuring individuals have the tools to thrive.

I immigrated to Canada from Russia at 18 to pursue my undergraduate studies. Even before that, I traveled extensively and did an exchange in the U.S. at 16. Being an immigrant and an internationally minded person is a big part of my identity—I feel happiest when surrounded by diverse people from different backgrounds and cultures. That’s why I ultimately made Canada my home!

My journey into the social impact and finance space began at UTM when I met an inspiring economics professor, Michel Serafinelli. He opened my eyes to how business and finance can be used as tools for meaningful change. After graduating, I briefly worked in banking but was always searching for a career where I could make a real difference. That led me to Rise, where I’ve grown into different roles and truly found my place.

I strongly believe that businesses should integrate social impact into what they do. To me, the most exciting challenge is finding creative solutions to societal problems—ones that not only work within existing systems but also generate sustainable financial empowerment for those working toward a better future.

I’m excited to be a mentor because I love meeting new people and hearing their stories. During my undergrad, I sometimes felt lonely and uncertain, even though I had great people around me. I know how overwhelming it can be to navigate “adult life,” and I’d love to connect with someone who might feel the same way. Whether it’s figuring out your career direction, redefining success on your own terms, or adjusting to life in Canada as an international student, I’m happy to share my experiences and hopefully help you design a fulfilling life—one that allows you to grow, thrive, and enjoy the journey without feeling like only work alone should define your entire existence.

More About Me…

Beyond work, I love immersing myself in creativity and self-development. You’ll often find me at TIFF, exploring international films that expand my perspective, or strumming my ukulele—something I picked up during lockdown.

I’m passionate about sustainable fashion and enjoy hunting for vintage finds and upcycling pieces. Dancing is another love of mine—whether it’s disco, salsa, or bachata, I’ll be on the dance floor!

When summer arrives, I take every chance to be outdoors, whether hiking, biking, yoga in the park or riding my scooter. And of course, I can’t imagine life without our eight-year-old Siberian husky, Archer.

I’m also open about my mental health journey. I’ve experienced bouts of depression, and anxiety has been a constant companion—one that I’m learning to befriend rather than fight. Honestly, it’s going well, and I feel hopeful about life, even though there are ups and downs I need to navigate. Mental well-being is a lifelong process, and I believe in embracing it with self-compassion, curiosity, and the support of good people along the way.

Natalia Ramnarine

Natalia Ramnarine (HBSc 2017 UTM)
Global Study Manager, AstraZeneca

About Me

I’ve had the privilege of growing up surrounded by educators and mentors who played a significant role in shaping my values and career aspirations. Their guidance instilled in me a deep appreciation for mentorship, and it’s something I’m eager to pay forward. I want to share my knowledge and experiences to help UTM students and new graduates navigate both personal and professional challenges, and support them as they work towards their full potential.

I’m of Indo-Caribbean heritage, and like many students, I initially thought my path would lead to becoming a doctor. It was a dream many people around me shared, and for a while, I thought it was my only option. However, as I explored different fields during my time at UTM, I discovered a passion for research that changed my perspective entirely. I realized that the world of research and its ability to drive real change in healthcare truly excited me.

My journey at UTM was transformative—it helped lay the foundation for both my career and personal growth. The diverse opportunities I had to explore various fields were crucial in helping me discover my true passions. From academic challenges to extracurricular activities, my time at UTM shaped who I am today.

As a mentor, I’m passionate about working with students who are open to exploring their career paths and refining their goals. I know how it feels to be uncertain about your next steps, and I want to help students navigate that uncertainty. Whether you're figuring out your career direction or transitioning from school to the workforce, I’m here to offer support, advice, and guidance. I hope to work with mentees who are eager to reflect on their experiences, take initiative, and make the most of their academic and professional journeys.
