Iacobucci was the Federal Government's Representative in the negotiations leading to the settlement agreement in 2005 relating to Indian Residential Schools—the largest financial settlement in Canadian history. His 2013 report as an independent reviewer for the Ontario Government on First Nations Representation on Ontario juries expressed hope that his report would serve as a wake-up call to remedy broader and systemic issues that are at the heart of the relationship between Ontario's justice system and Indigenous peoples in the province and emphasized the need for establishing a government-to-government relationship that "incorporates an underlying respect for cultural, traditional, and historical values that are different." Currently, Iacobucci represents the Province of Ontario in its negotiations with the Chiefs of the Matawa Council on the Ring of Fire and recently completed a comprehensive report for former Police Chief William Blair of the Toronto Police Services that relates to encounters of police with people in crisis.
The lecture will open with a traditional Indigenous welcome by Cat Criger, UTM's Indigenous Elder in Residence. After the lecture, savour mouth-watering traditional Indigenous cuisine all locally sourced and inspired by the culinary wisdom of the Anishnawbe.
