At the Music Development Lab, we focus on infants’ and young children’s perception of music and speech. We study their perception and memory for vocal and instrumental melodies. We also study their attention to musical aspects of speech, for example, the intonation patterns that reveal the speaker’s emotional state (e.g., happy, sad) or communicative intentions (e.g., asking a question, making a comment). We examine the songs that parents sing to infants and how those songs regulate infant emotion. We are also interested in children’s early singing in the toddler and preschool phase and their song preferences.
