The University of Toronto Institute for Management & Innovation, in collaboration with Scotiabank, is pleased to invite you to The 2024 Fighting Crime With Big Data & Artificial Intelligence Conference.

About the 2024 Conference

This year’s conference will address the Illegal Wildlife Trade, a USD $20 billion problem that is devastating wildlife and the environment, as well as funding organized crime, money laundering, and terrorism activities.

A wide-range of leading expert speakers and panelists, many with on-the-ground experience, will be participating. They include representatives from FINTRAC (the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Last Great Ape Organization (LAGA) and Eco Activists for Governance and Law Enforcement (EAGLE), which are both in Africa, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Scotiabank, and the University of Toronto.

You will learn how very significant the Illegal Wildlife Trade problem is, hear real-life case studies and learn how in addition to traditional intelligence, investigation, and law enforcement activities, new capabilities utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise are also being effectively deployed to identify bad actors in this area. These AI tools combined with traditional methods, are having a meaningful impact.

Attendees & Schedule

Attendees do not need a technology background and will find significant value in this very interesting half-day event. The event is open to the public and it is free to attend!

There will be a trade show and light lunch from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, and the Conference will begin at 1:00 pm.

In addition, for the past four months more than 300 Ph.D., Masters, and Undergraduate students from across the University of Toronto have been participating in the annual IMI BIGDataAIHUB Case Competition using big data and AI technologies to identify bad actors engaged in the Illegal Wildlife Trade. The Conference will conclude between 4:30-5:00 pm with the announcement of winning teams from the Fifth Annual IMI Big Data & Artificial Intelligence Competition, with winners sharing $30,000 in cash prizes.
