U of T carved coat of arms

Announcing UTM's Director of Campus Safety

Alexandra Gillespie

Good news: Deborah Fritz has accepted the position as Director of Campus Safety at U of T Mississauga, which she has held on an interim basis since September 2021.

A dedicated professional with more than three decades of safety experience, Deborah will continue to lead UTM’s team of corporals, special constables, and building patrol officers; to foster open, reciprocal relationships with university and community partners; and to collaborate with students and colleagues across U of T on integrated approaches to physical, mental, and social health. She’ll also build on her track record as a solutions-oriented leader for equitable safety practice, working to make UTM an even more welcoming place for everyone to flourish and belong.

Before joining UTM, Deborah worked in increasingly senior positions on the Campus Safety team at UTSG, including as Community Relations Officer, Staff Sergeant, and Assistant Director. There, in earning U of T’s safety award for exceptional service, she developed effective crime prevention strategies; grew safety-oriented community networks; and shared evidence-based advice for colleagues and university leadership.

She came to U of T after more than twenty years as a police constable, where she led investigations in the divisional youth and family violence bureau; implemented crime reduction tactics through education and environmental design; and earned a Governor’s General Medal for Exemplary Service. Along the way, she completed numerous advanced training seminars, including the Leadership in Crisis Program at Harvard.

Deborah will continue to apply the same energy and dedication at UTM, working with diverse experts to promote the campus’s ethos of cooperation; to enact anti-oppression and anti-violence strategies as collective responsibilities; and to drive equitable safety initiatives that benefit our entire community. We’re grateful for her leadership—and for all that she has already done and will continue to do for U of T.

Please join us in congratulating Deborah.
