Student Staff Hiring

Global Learning  

This portfolio leads the development, delivery, and assessment of programming and events for the outbound/inbound exchange and UTM Abroad programs. It will act as a positive ambassador for UTM's Global Learning offerings and promote them through fairs, tabling, social media, class talks, and more. Some flexible availability is also needed to hold office hours, one-on-one meetings with students, and lead programming. 

IEC Programming and Events 

The portfolio aims to support the planning and execution of programs and community-building events to help international students transition into and through university and, to facilitate intercultural education and awareness to the UTM campus. This includes, but is not limited to, planning and running events and outreach related to intercultural programs and events on campus such as the Global and Intercultural Fluency Training Series, Intercultural Weekly Drop-In Discussions, English Language Conversation Circles, International Education Week, International Student Mentorship Program, Canada-Eh?, mentorship programs, international student orientation, Canadian-focused field trips and workshop series, student socials, community-building activities, and more.

Marketing & Communications  

This portfolio plans and implements the IEC communications strategy, and develops marketing and promotional materials for programs and events. This includes leading social media strategies and using various outlets to promote these programs and events, including print material (posters, flyers, banners, foam boards) and digital resources (TV, website, videos, blogs). This portfolio has creative license with creating all content under the general IEC branding guidelines. 

Transition Coaching  

This portfolio assists with pre-arrival resource support, one-on-one peer support to international and new-to-Canada student and develop and deliver transition sessions for international and new-to-Canada students. This includes International and New-to-Canada Student Orientation and the Foundation for Success Series for International Students featuring health insurance, academic rights, off-campus housing, work, experience and careers, and taxes.  

Operations  

This portfolio supports overall departmental operations and facilitate collaboration across the department. It also acts as the first point-of-contact for students at the IEC main office, conducts triage and check-in support for Immigration Advisors, and would maintain flexibility in their schedule to support other portfolios in events, programs, and sessions as needed from time to time. 

Special Projects  

This portfolio supports overall departmental special projects that support the IEC's mission to globalize the student experience. From supporting global learning initiatives to helping international students find community on campus, this portfolio supports the IEC in improving our process, learning more about our students, and using project management principles to improve the way the department functions and how we support students. 

Generally, we're hiring for Team Leaders and Assistants. Each portfolio will have their own combination of job titles.

Team Leaders will work for 30 hours during the summer on project-based work. During the fall winter, leadership roles follow the work study schedule and focus on leading their teams and supporting the assistants. Assistants will start just before the Fall semester begins and will follow the work study schedule.

Shortly, we will have information about sessions and resume critiques run by the Career Centre to help you with your application.

It's good to make sure early on! Here are the eligibility requirements for all our positions:

• A returning student in the 2026-2027 academic year;
• A UTM student in good academic standing; minimum 2.0 CGPA
• Legally able to work in Canada (International students must ensure they fulfill all government requirements listed here);
• Please note: students can only hold one Work-Study position.
• Other eligibility requirements may be added by the Work-Study program.

We have a variety of positions, each looking for their own unique skillsets! It's up to you to identify your strengths, find the suitable position for you within the IEC, and tailor your application to make sure those experiences you have shine through! 

Let's explore the IEC's portfolios for a couple of examples.

Experience travelling abroad and the desire to interact with diverse cultures and nationalities would make Global Learning a good fit for you. At the same time, these multicultural experiences are also sought after by Intercultural Programming & Events, in addition to experience planning and running student-facing programs. In the same vein is International Programming & Events, which takes the focus of seeking out students who have a keen mentorship eye and know what it takes to help others transition to Canada. This is also generally what Transition Coaching is looking for!

Promoting these resources to students means Marketing & Communications look for people who have experience taking vast amounts of information, translate them into attractive graphic design, and leverage social media to boost engagement. At times, students may be overwhelmed with all their options and come to our office for help, which is why Operations calls for student staff with exceptional customer service experience and who can effectively refer students to the appropriate resources they need! Lastly, Special Projects supports the entire department through process continuous improvement!

Specifically for Marketing & Communications, a work portfolio is also required as it helps us review your graphic design experience and other exciting multimedia skills you may have!

Of course! We understand that some students may be new to the process of applying for jobs in Canada or simply need a refresher. To support you with writing the resume and cover letter, we will be offering optional group workshops and individual critiques.
