Undergrad students Asma Shakul and Awa Kane showcase their research at their first academic conference

The UTM Department of Sociology is proud to share that two of our undergraduate students, Asma Shakul and Awa Kane, recently participated in their first academic conference.  The EIR Regional Conference ran from May 5th to 7th, 2023 at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

Anti-Racism and Anti-Elder Abuse Symposium organized by Associate Professor Weiguo Zhang

On April 23, 2023, Professor Weiguo Zhang successfully organized a hybrid symposium on Anti-Racism and Anti-Elder Abuse. The aim of the event was to promote safe and inclusive communities for older Chinese immigrants. The symposium had several objectives, including sharing experiences in addressing racism and ageism in Chinese communities, learning from experiences in non-Chinese communities, and discussing future action plans.

Robin Gray doesn’t believe in empty promises – which is why she’s embracing a new role after being appointed the University of Toronto Mississauga’s first-ever special adviser on Indigenous rematriation. 

“It’s not enough just to say it,” says Gray, an assistant professor in U of T Mississauga’s department of sociology. “You have to walk the walk.”
