Requirements for Master's Programs

  • A four-year B.Sc. or B.A.Sc, or its equivalent from a recognized university.
  • High academic standing, equivalent to a B or higher (equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4 point scale) at the University of Toronto, normally demonstrated by the average grade in the final year.

Requirements for Ph.D Programs

  • An appropriate M.Sc. degree, or its equivalent from a recognized university. Direct entry from a bachelor's degree is also possible for applicants providing evidence of exceptional scholastic achievement and skill at research.
  • High academic standing equivalent to a University of Toronto B+ or higher (equivalent to a 3.3 on a 4 point scale) in previous degrees.

English Facility Requirement

If your primary language is not English and you graduated from a non-Canadian university where the language of instruction and examination was not English, then you must demonstrate your facility in English by completing either the TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, or COPE tests, achieving the minimum scores prescribed by the School of Graduate Studies. The proficiency requirement should be met at the time you submit your application and must be made before registration is allowed. 

Please consult the Graduate Affairs Officer in the Department of Geology to determine if the test will be necessary. An official statement from your institution will be required, confirming the use of English as the language of  instruction and examination.

An admissions committee, chaired by the Associate Chair for Graduate Affairs, evaluates applications for admission to graduate studies in the Department of Geology. To be considered for guaranteed funding and scholarship assistance, ALL applications, both domestic and international must be complete (ie., transcripts, letters of reference, English proficiency, exam scores, etc.).


Exceptions:

  • Applicants who are Canadian citizens who studied at a Canadian university where the language of instruction is French are not required to complete an English-language facility test.
  • Applicants whose primary language is not English who completed a program of study at a university where the language of instruction and examination is English will not be required to complete an English-language facility test.
  • At the time of application, applicants must provide an official letter of certification from the institution that the language of instruction and examination is English. However, an applicant may be ask to provide an English-facility test if the Department deems that the applicant's English skills are not adequate for entry to the program.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the methods acceptable to School of Graduate Studies in demonstrating one's facility in English.

Minimum Score Requirement (TOEFL and TWE)

  • Paper-based test:  580 and 4.0
  • Computer-based test: 237 and 4.0
  • Internet-based test:  93 and 22 (both writing and speaking)

Applicants may also submit scores from IELTS, MELAB, or COPE to satisfy English facility requirements. Score requirements for each test are as follows:

  • IELTS at least 7.0
  • MELAB at least 85
  • COPE at least 4, with 1 in each component and 2 in the writing component

English facility scores are valid for only two years from the date of testing.
