Value and Duration
Each award reimburses postdoctoral researchers $10,000 or $30,000 towards independent research for the duration of their first UTM postdoctoral engagement (up to two years).
The structure of the award is as follows:
- The award is not income and follows an expense reimbursement process. The postdoctoral employee or trainee receives an annual salary and/or fellowship as per the terms of the postdoctoral engagement, supported by the PI/division and/or the external award;
- In addition to their annual salary and/or fellowship, the postdoctoral employee or trainee receives the competitive research award of $10,000 or $30,000 disbursed through an expensed reimbursement process managed by the UTM department where the postdoc will be engaged;
- Unspent funds at the end of the postdoctoral engagement, regardless of the reason, are to be returned.
The program offers two funding levels, $10,000 or $30,000, to support projects with varying research approaches and resource needs. Applicants may apply to either level, funding the proposed budget developed around direct research costs.
Purpose
The Postdoctoral Competitive Research Award at the University of Toronto Mississauga is a prestigious opportunity to support early-career scholars to develop and expand their research expertise at one of the world’s most distinguished public research universities. The program will empower postdoctoral scholars with the autonomy to pursue an ambitious research program, while benefiting from close collaboration with leading faculty and access to tailored professional and career development supports. The program is designed for exceptional postdoctoral scholars eager to contribute to an innovative, vibrant and inclusive academic community. This program specifically seeks to bridge the critical gap between doctoral training and independent academic careers by providing postdoctoral fellows with the resources and autonomy necessary to establish themselves as independent researchers. Recipients are expected to develop and lead their own research agenda, distinct from but complementary to their supervisor’s work, positioning them for future faculty appointments or leadership roles in research-intensive environments.
Eligibility
This award is open to both domestic and international candidates.
Applicants must:
- Currently be engaged as a postdoctoral fellow (employee or trainee) of the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) (teaching hospital postdocs are not employees of the university);
- Have demonstrated academic excellence, proven capacity to conceptualize and execute independent research beyond their doctoral work, and evidence of intellectual leadership in their chosen field;
- Complete all doctoral degree requirements by the time the award commences and be within five years from the completion of their degree;
- Have not previously held a Postdoctoral Competitive Research Award.
Award recipients must:
- Be engaged as a postdoctoral employee/trainee of UTM with an engagement end date of no less than 12 months from the award start (teaching hospital postdocs are not employees of the university);
- Be hired by a UTM supervisor (or co-supervisor), with a UTM budgetary appointment, who is appointed to a graduate unit at the University of Toronto.
- In the event of co-supervision, the UTM faculty member with a primary budgetary appointment at UTM should be the primary supervisor. Co-supervision, where a second supervisor is a faculty member with a budgetary appointment at UTM will be considered, although preference will be given to applications listing as primary supervisor, a faculty member who holds their budgetary appointment at UTM.
- Register and remain registered with the Postdoctoral Office at the School of Graduate Studies (SGS);
- Not hold a faculty position or be on leave from such position;
- Commence the award within 3 months of the date of the award letter.
Use of Funds
Award funds must be used solely to support the research activities proposed in the recipient’s approved application. The funds are to reimburse the postdoctoral researcher and may not be redirected, reallocated, or otherwise used by the supervisor or host laboratory for purposes unrelated to the approved project.
Selection Criteria
Applicant's will be evaluated on the following general criteria, modelled after tri-agency criteria:
- Research Experience and Potential (40%) *
This criterion assesses the following:
- Academic & research background: evidence of readiness to undertake advanced independent research; timely completion of doctoral studies
- Research achievements & recognition: quality and impact of scholarly outputs
- Leadership, mentorship & engagement potential in research and academic settings
- Research trajectory with potential for meaningful contributions at UTM
*Award adjudication will consider a broad range of contributions, and will not solely rely on publication frequency and/or journal impact factors (see San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA, 2012);
2. Quality of Proposed Research / Scholarship Proposal (40%)
This criterion assesses the following:
- Originality & significance of proposed research
- Independence from supervisor’s research, leading original research program
- Impact & relevance, aligning with U of T’s research priorities & UTM’s strategic framework
- Feasibility & rigor: clarity & coherence of proposed research
- Research environment & support from supervisor and UTM department
- Long-term potential of proposed research to generate significant scholarly outputs
- Eagerness to contribute to an innovative, vibrant, and inclusive research community
3. Appropriateness of Budget and Justification (20%)
This criterion assesses the following:
- Alignment of the budget with the proposed research objectives
- Reasonableness and justification of proposed costs
- Feasibility of completing the research within the specified timeline and funding level
Application Process
Applicants interested in the Postdoctoral Competitive Research Award Program should contact the current UTM supervisor(s) and/or UTM co-supervisor(s).
Complete application packages should be submitted by the postdoctoral applicant via the PCRA Application Form to the UTM Office of the Vice-Principal Academic and Dean (OVPAD) by Thursday, May 7, 2026 (11:59 p.m.). Late applications will not be accepted.
Application Package
The application package should be compiled into a single PDF file using 12 pt font and a minimum margin of ¾ inch (1.87 cm) with the following components in the order as listed below. Use the naming convention: Lastname_Firstname_PCRA Application.
Applications will be deemed ineligible if the page limit restrictions are not adhered to.
Application package must include:
- A supervisor statement from the primary faculty supervisor or co-supervisor (if the co-supervisor is the UTM faculty member). The statement must be written in letter format and include the UTM department letterhead and signature of the UTM faculty member. (max. one page)
The statement should:
a) Speak to the supervisor’s commitment to the candidate’s academic professional trajectory and development of an independent research program.
b) Provide details regarding the candidate’s research environment, clearly stating the supervisor’s and department’s commitment. Examples of commitment include (but are not limited to) mentorship, opportunities for collaboration, dissemination, and/or knowledge translation, resources (e.g., funding, facilities, personnel) that will support the candidate as they carry out their proposed research.
c) Summarize key disciplinary norms such as measures of excellence, publication practices, and typical indicators of research impact.
- An Independent research proposal from the candidate that should clearly articulate how the proposed work (a) is independent from the supervisor’s work and (b) contributes to an innovative, vibrant and inclusive academic community. The proposal should also outline the anticipated long-term impact of the research, including how it contributes to the field and aligns with U of T’s strategic research priorities and UTM’s strategic framework. (max. one page, plus up to one additional page for references/citations).
- Budget (max. one page)
Applicants must provide a budget, using the table below as an example, itemizing all anticipated expenses associated with the proposed project. All expenditures must be direct research costs; overhead or indirect costs are not eligible. The budget must be economical, practical, and closely reflect the proposed methodology.
| Expense Item | Expense Description | Amount ($) |
| Sample: Supplies | Lab consumables | $5,000 |
| Sample: Services | Research Sample Analysis x 30 samples @ $100 per sample | $3,000 |
| Sample: Participant Honoraria | 20 participants @ $10 each to compensate for their time | $2,000 |
