UTM Beyond the Campus | Race and Policing in the GTA

Professor Owusu-Bempah standing beside the Toronto Police sign

Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018
7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Alderlea, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Pavilion

40 Elizabeth Street South, Brampton, ON (MAP)

Join U of T Mississauga alumni and friends in Brampton for a presentation on Race and Policing in the GTA by Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, assistant professor of sociology at U of T Mississauga.

Despite official claims of tolerance and inclusion in Canada, black populations within the Greater Toronto Area have a historically tenuous relationship with local law enforcement agencies.

Professor Owusu-Bempah, examines some of the causes of this tension by exploring perspectives on race and policing from both sides of the “thin blue line” at UTM Beyond the Campus. In addition to presenting his own theory of “mutual disdain”, Professor Owusu-Bempah will also give voice to different segments of the GTA's black communities as they detail their perceptions of and experiences with the police.

Register online by Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018.

Complimentary refreshments will be served. Complimentary parking available on site at Alderlea. Spaces are limited. Complimentary overflow parking available at City Hall requires a short walk to Alderlea (MAP).
