2016-2017 Undergraduate Award Winners

In the summer, the Biology Executive Committee solicits student nominations from Biology faculty and staff for several undergraduate awards based on the previous academic year.  We are pleased to announce the following Biology undergraduates have received awards for the 2014-2015 academic year (see previous winners).

Roy Ivor Memorial Award in Biology

  • Tiffany Lam has received the Roy Ivor Memorial Award in Biology.
  • This award is given to the student who has achieved a high academic standing in BIO205 (Ecology) and has a genuine interest in ecology. The award was established in 1981 by friends in memory of the late Roy Ivor. Dr. Ivor was an internationally known ornithologist and author who welcomed many students and staff from the University of Toronto Mississauga to the Winding Lane Bird Sanctuary, which was located across from the campus.

Alan F. Coventry Memorial Scholarship, Parts I & II

  • Nicole Black has received the Alan F. Coventry Memorial Scholarship Part I.
    • This award is given to the student with the highest academic standing in three of six second year Biology courses (BIO202, BIO203, 205, 206, 207, or 210).
  • Fatima Alvi has received the Alan F. Coventry Memorial Scholarship Part II
    • This award is given to the year three student who has made the greatest contribution to the Department of Biology based on nominations by the faculty and staff in the department.
  • These awards were originally established in 1974 by friends and colleagues in memory of the late Prof. Alan Coventry. Prof. Coventry made significant contributions to the University of Toronto over his lifetime. He lived in Streetsville when he retired and frequently visited the young Erindale College Campus. He gave a collection of local plants to the campus and always showed a great interest in what is now known as the University of Toronto Mississauga.

Jufiyah Rajan Memorial Scholarship in Biology

  • Dayapreet Kaur has received the Jufiyah Rajan Memorial Scholarship in Biology.
  • This award is given to the first year student with the highest average in BIO152 and BIO153. This award was originally established in 2001 by the Erindale Biological Society, family and friend in memory of Jufiyah Rajan who was a student at the University of Toronto Mississauga until her early passing in 1999.

W.T. Gray Scholarship in Microbiology

  • (TBA) has received the W.T. Gray Scholarship in Microbiology.
  • This award is given to an upper year student in recognition for their outstanding achievement in a microbiology course. This award was originally established in 1984 by the St. Lawrence Starch Company in memory of Mr. W.T. Gray and his life-long service to the company.

Jackie Hart Memorial Scholarship 

  • Priscilla Valentino has received the Jackie Hart Memorial Scholarship.
  • This award is given to the student in the Biology Specialist Program, who has the highest overall standing at the end of their third year. This award was originally established in 1978 by family, friends and colleagues of Jackie Hart who was a student at Erindale College when she passed away because of a tragic house fire. She was a scholar and was well liked by her classmates.

Pynn Family Paleontology Award 

  • (TBA) has received the Pynn Family Paleontology Award.
  • This award is given to a student who has the highest academic standing and who is enrolled in a paleontology program. This is a relatively new award, and was given for the first time this spring. This award was established in 2012 by Dr. Bruce Pynn, an alumnus of UofT Mississauga, to award undergraduate students who are pursuing paleontology and have demonstrated financial need.

Toronto Biotechnology Award

  • Anna Aniserowicz has received the Toronto Biotechnology Initiative Award
  • On recommendation of the University of Toronto at Mississauga Associate Dean (Sciences), to be awarded to the undergraduate Erindale student who has achieved the highest academic standing in a biotechnology course/program at UTM.
