Identifying genetic risk factors for complex traits and diseases

I have been involved in numerous studies to characterize the genetic architecture of common traits and diseases, including type 2 diabetes, lipid concentrations, anthropometric traits (Body Mass Index, Waist Hip Ratio), and COVID-19 severity. I have collaborated for more than a decade with Dr. Miguel Cruz, from the Medical Center "Siglo XXI" in Mexico, in Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) for a broad range of traits in samples from Mexico City. We then contributed our summary data to large international efforts, comprising many other researchers throughout the world, which have led to important advances in our understanding of the genetic basis of these traits and diseases (as relevant examples, please see Suzuki et al. 2024. Nature 627:347-357 for type 2 diabetes, Yengo et al. 2022. Nature 610:704-712 for height, and Graham et al. 2021. Nature 600:675-679 for lipid concentrations). I have also participated in international efforts to characterize the genetics of COVID-19 severity, under the umbrella of the GenOMICC and SCOURGE consortia (Pairo-Castineira et al. 2023. Nature 617:764-768, Diz-de-Almeida et al. 2024. eLife 13: RP93666)
