UTM Transit Support for Graduate Research Students and Postdoctoral Fellows

* UTM Transit Support Program will end on December 31, 2021. Applications sent after this date will not be accepted. *

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the University has suspended service of the UTM/UTSG Shuttle Bus for the Summer and Fall semesters in 2020. We know, however, that the shuttle has played an important role for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows travelling between the campuses; and we want to ensure that these researchers can continue to make their valuable, in-person contributions to UTM’s community. Accordingly, the Office of the Vice-President Research will cover reasonable transit costs for work-related travel between Mississauga and downtown Toronto until the shuttle service resumes.

  • The coverage entails up to a maximum of $14 per return trip. It applies to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows listed on an approved request to access on-campus research facilities at UTM.
  • Department chairs should estimate the average travel costs per month per researcher based on the number of return trips each researcher will likely make, up to a maximum of 3 return trips per week. Departments will then provide that amount to the researchers for whom it applies.
  • If a researcher needs to come to campus more frequently than 3 times per week, we ask that the departments cover the cost of the additional trips as a mechanism for cost sharing with the VPR. The VPR will reimburse departments based on how many researchers have received funding: please apply to rong.wu@utoronto.ca.
  • The funding can be applied to any means of transit to the campus, including TTC, MiWay, taxis, etc. It cannot cover the cost of parking at UTM. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows should provide a record to their departments confirming that they have used the allotted funding for work-related transit purposes.

Process

  1. Departments should collect reimbursement requests and transit receipts for researchers on a MONTHLY basis: Please ensure at the departmental level that all monthly requests submitted to the OVPR meet the eligibility criteria. Please note: this Transit Support program will end on December 31, 2021. Applications sent after this date will not be accepted. If departments have any more applications, please ensure they are submitted by December 31, 2021.

  2. Business Officers / Department Managers should download and complete the following reimbursement form and email it to rong.wu@utoronto.ca

    UTM Transit Support Reimbursement Form
(Please rename the file by replacing “Department Name” with your department, and “month” with the applicable month for reimbursement.)

  3. OVPR will transfer the total amount of reimbursement to the CC/CFC specified by the department.

  4. The department will then distribute the reimbursement to the researchers for whom it applies.
