These grants are designed to support the planning for, and implementation of, collaborative research grants involving an interdisciplinary team of researchers and led by full-time UTM faculty members. We have several levels of support depending on the size and stage of the funding opportunity.
Major Research Management Project Fund
The tri-campus Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, administers a fund designed to support major collaborative research projects where the budget request is typically in excess of $1M total, with an annual budget of several hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. To learn about this opportunity, please review the MRMP program guidelines. The opportunity has two streams: Stream 1 (up to 10K to support proposal development) and Stream 2 (up to 50K to support project management for successful proposals; when matched, these amounts are 20K and 100K). The funding opportunity requires a divisional cash match, which UTM OVPR can contribute to. It is recommended to seek match contribution from other units involved in project as well.
To apply: Before applying to the MRMP program, please contact our office to seek matching support. You can contact Payam Zahedi payam.zahedi@utoronto.ca to start the process. If matching funds area available then a letter of support will be crafted for your MRMP request.
Collaborative Research Planning Grants (up to $10,000)
UTM-based lead applicants may request up to $10K to support proposal development for submissions to collaborative grant opportunities where the total funding envelope is $200K or above. The objective of this funding is to provide support for UTM faculty to bring together a team of researchers and partners to develop collaborative grant proposals, with a priority on Tri-Council opportunities. Examples include: SSHRC Partnership Development Grants and Partnership Grants; NSERC Create Grants; Connaught Global Challenge Awards, etc. Other grants can be considered; please contact awards.ovprutm@utoronto.ca to see if additional opportunities are eligible for support. A UTM faculty member must be the lead applicant on the grant. Planning grants to support ongoing research outside the partnership suites, such as SSHRC Insight or NSERC Discovery, are not eligible for support from this fund. Researchers will be eligible for only one grant within a 12-month period. For grants exceeding $1M, faculty are encouraged to apply to the OVPRI’s Major Research Project Management Fund (see above); UTM can provide matching funds for this program, as described above. If the PI takes this route, they can receive 20K of support overall. Please note: if a UTM faculty member receives support from this fund, it will count as the UTM “match” for the Major Research Management Project Fund’s Stream 1, should the applicant be pursuing that opportunity.

SSHRC Connection Grant
OVPR will provide up to 5K in cash support for application where the lead applicant is a UTM faculty member and up to 1K in cash support where UTM faculty member(s) play a significant role, but not as lead applicant. Our office can also support faculty in calculating in-kind contributions. The office will also create a letter of support for inclusion in the grant application as part of this process.
