In just a few hours – from 5:30 to 7:30 to be precise – we will gather at the Blind Duck Pub to celebrate this year’s Positive Space Gala.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the University of Toronto’s Positive Space Campaign. It was started in 1996 by a small group of dedicated individuals who wanted to increase visibility and support for LGBTQ students, staff, and faculty across all three campuses.

Posting things such as rainbow flags and “this is a positive space” were quite significant acts 20 years ago. We have come a long way since. Today, rainbow triangles, flags, and icons can be seen in many public places along with greater visibility in post-secondary schools across Canada. The University of Toronto was one of the first to develop a campaign to welcome the sexual and gender diversity of its community members.

Over the years the university has recognized how important it is to not only welcome LGBTQ people to study, learn, research, work, and live here but also to ensure campus services, classrooms, and the workplace are actively evolving to be more positive and inclusive. We are committed to continuing this work of making our campuses more inclusive to ever increasing diverse populations, including sexual and gender diversity.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary, Positive Space Committees across all three campuses have organized celebrations and updated the website where you can learn more about the campaign and how to get involved.

At UTM, the Positive Space Committee along with my office welcomes the U of T community to show your pride and support for our community’s gender and sexual diversity. Join us today between 5:30-7:30 pm at the Blind Duck Pub (Student Centre) to celebrate our LGBTQ students, staff and faculty and allies. The event is open to all – students, staff, faculty, and community members – and entertainment will be provided by DJ Officer Lubo “Positive Spins for Positive Space” hosted by the Campus Police. Complimentary refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

See you at the Pub!
