UTM and the Community

November 7, 2012

I spent a good part of Monday afternoon with Mayor McCallion, talking about the intertwined relationship between UTM and the City of Mississauga. While we see this relationship come to life every time thousands show up for an event such as the Run for the Cure or Jane Goodall lecture, I wonder how many people drive daily up and down the Mississauga Road actively think about what lies behind the thick wall of trees enveloping the campus or how it impacts the community.

A time to remember and express gratitude

November 11, 2013

As we do every year, we gathered this morning at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and our democracy.

Snow day closure – or not: Please pause before you shoot the messenger

February 7, 2014

Last Wednesday was quite an interesting day, and not just because of all the adventure we had with a snowstorm that turned out to be much worse than anticipated. The highlight of my day was reading the commentary on UTM’s Facebook page.

I was quite impressed with the linguistic creativity of our students and even learned a new expletive or two! My personal favorite among the comments was, “People who make decisions about closures need to be fired and replaced.” As that “people” would happen to be me, I thought I should fess up before someone innocent gets the boot.

Remembrance Day: Let’s reflect on what we are remembering

We gathered today, as we do every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11thmonth, to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and democracy.

Happy holidays! We have much to celebrate!

December 19, 2014

Happy Holidays, UTM—I wish you a most wonderful time with your loved ones!

While you enjoy the festivities and good life during this special time of the year, I hope you won’t forget to also unplug every now and then, rest a bit and recharge. You all surely deserve some R&R after what seems like a year of non-stop torrent of activity. And do also take a moment to pat yourself on the back for your part in helping to make 2014 a banner year for UTM.

Welcome to 2015!

The new year will no doubt bring new challenges but, more importantly, it will also usher in exciting opportunities to make a difference.

Strike’s over; now let’s focus on moving forward

The collective sigh of relief across U of T’s three campuses was quite audible as CUPE 3902 Unit-1 members voted last week to accept binding arbitration.
