Farewell UTM, and thank you for six wonderful years!

August 30, 2016

Tomorrow will be my last official day at UTM. After six years and two months in the service of this remarkable institution, I will be signing off and passing the baton to Professor Ulli Krull.

Our new website – a pivotal asset for UTM

February 6, 2012

It was fun waking up to a brand new UTM website this morning. But there is more than just fun to this new window we have to the world. Let’s reflect back for a moment.

UTM’s BOUNDLESS Campaign: My not-so ‘hidden agenda’

May 24, 2012

After months or planning and preparations, we finally launched the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) chapter of the BOUNDLESS Campaign yesterday afternoon. What an inspiring spectacle!

UTM “springs” to life

September 6, 2012

With students back, UTM is beaming with life again!

New Year’s Message

January 7, 2013

Dear Colleagues and Students,

Welcome to 2013 and my best wishes for a happy, productive and impactful year ahead.

UTM’s economic impact: $1.3 billion and beyond

April 23, 2013

Hidden behind the camouflage of trees lining the Mississauga Road, UTM has been writing quite a story of the proverbial town-and-gown partnership over the past 46 years. We’ve known intuitively that this partnership is an important one, and members of our community would readily say that UTM is a significant contributor to the local economy.

But how significant?

Name that building!

June 18, 2013

The first phase of re-construction of the North Building is progressing at a remarkable speed. It will actually be a free-standing building linked at two levels to the remainder of the old North Building.  I would encourage you to take a walk around the outside of the site to see the progress and get a sense of how large this project is, replacing what was two stories with four and on an expanded footprint.  The main floor will include new and expanded food services, open and bookable study spaces, and rehearsal facilities for the Theater and Drama program.

Student Centre expansion vs. Library space

January 27, 2014

Catherine Boisvert yesterday posted an interesting question on my Facebook page:

“Dear Principal Saini, I was wondering, why is there so much hype about expanding the student centre? During the second half of each semester, there is absolutely not enough room for students to sit in the library. Wouldn’t the students’ money be better spent expanding the library, instead of the student centre? I would rather spend money on something that will help my education than expanding a pub. Thank you, Catherine”

Debunking the myths: More on the value of university education

July 10, 2014

I have expressed my frustration in the past about the popular tendency to beat up on the universities and university education without evidence, and often in the face of the facts pointing exactly in the opposite direction. Here is an article from AUCC President Paul Davidson that thoughtfully exposes the risks of short-term and short-sighted thinking and argues for a more evidence-based approach to plann

Welcome to another great year!

September 2, 2014

Wow, what a transformation! The campus is bustling again. Just a week ago, as I was on my habitual evening walk with our dog, the campus looked so empty. You could’ve had the ‘Honda Indy’ right here on the Outer Circle Road! Oh, wait a minute; someone in Dad’s blue Bimmer did think it was a racetrack! (Btw, I have your licence plate number…)

It is so nice to have you all back. The summers are wonderful but by the end of August, I’m always ready to get back to the usual action. There’s something special about seeing the excited – and sometimes a little nervous – faces of the new students. It is great to see the staff and student-volunteers helping the newcomers find their way or settle in, and profs getting ready for the classes.
