Language is power that need be carefully crafted and thus I have devoted my life to its craft.

Rebecca Zseder

Mississauga native Rebecca Zseder is a first-year UTM student specializing in English and minoring in geography. “Geography is an outlet for my intrigue with the world as a whole,” says Zseder. Her choice to specialize in English comes from her passion for reading and writing. In 2016, she was awarded the Sears Ontario Drama Festival Writing Award for exceptional writing of an original play. Using both geography and English as teachables, she hopes to one day become a high school teacher and ignite a passion for these subjects in other youth.

When deciding to attend UTM, Zseder considered the campus’ reputation, convenient location, and relatively small class sizes. However, once she started attending classes she was amazed by the unexpected sense of community on campus. She believes the pride of being a UTM student brings students together. “I never expected to feel at home so soon into my school experience,” she says. Although she is still in her first year, her current goal is to publish a compilation poetry book before she graduates.

Zseder is the City of Mississauga’s first youth poet laureate, serving as a literary ambassador for the community’s youth. This honorary position recognizes a young poet who writes excellent poetry or spoken word and has written on themes that are relevant to the citizens of Mississauga. She is also working with the City of Mississauga to facilitate programs in fitness, art and language. “This involvement has allowed me to work closely with the youth of the community,” says Zseder, “and do my best to inspire others using the passion that so inspired me.”
