The Challenge(s)

Project Title: Research Social-Emotional Learning (Research Stream)

Challenge: As a research-based organization, Start2Finish Canada wishes to engage in a scientifically sound research program to assess the potential benefits of Social Emotional Learning. The organization is in need of partners who can conduct this research. In the past, Start2Finish have used quantitative measures to analyze their programs, but with the introduction of Social Emotional Learning they wish to incorporate qualitative research as well. 

Project Description: 

In light of COVID, Start2Finish wishes to measure any improvements in elementary student (grades 1-8) resilience through qualitative or mixed methods research before and after going through their S2F Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. This resilience is specific to children living in deprivation and/or economic poverty. Start2Finish would be interested in understanding how temperament-based approaches such as SEL are perceived by students and how our curriculum may help improve resilience in their students. As children in these populations are often invisibilized or stereotyped, the organization desires to do a study that will both humanize and improve the understanding of SEL in our communities. Students applying for this project will be responsible for carrying through this initiative. 


Students will work toward synthesizing a reportable study with which Start2Finish can a) improve their programs and b) advocate for SEL integration in elementary student curriculums across the country.

  • Past research experience 

  • Interest in advocating for children living in deprivation and/or poverty 


Academic Background:  

  • Possible education background and some initial understanding of Social Emotional Learning 

  • Sociology or Psychology 

The Project

Starting with the mandatory Social Innovation Project Kick-Off Day on Saturday, Oct. 23rd, we are looking for a team of UTM students to work through these issues and come up with an innovative project plan and budget with this organization based on the challenge(s) they are facing. The Centre for Student Engagement will fund part or all of the project(s) based on the proposal(s).

Over the next 16 weeks, can a group of our UTM students come up with an innovative solution working with this organization?

3.    From the navigation menu, go to 'Experiential Learning': 

4.   Under 'Courses/Programs' select 'View' and then select 'Social Innovation Project Fall/Winter 2021/22) and click 'Apply' 

5.    Follow the program instructions on CLNx to officially register and select your project!
