The Make An Impact cohort will assist students in developing an understanding of power and privilege. Students will engage with the concept of social justice and learn how to give back to their community in a meaningful way.

Program Outline

Session 1: Foundations 

  • This session will provide students with an understanding of the utmLEAD Make an Impact Cohort; introduce students to the meaning of community; and support them in making an everyday impact in their own lives.

Session 2: Impacting Your Community

  • This session will allow students to discover ways to understand the community and use that understanding to impact the community; support students in understanding the importance of volunteering and how to get the most out of it; and assist them in discovering how to meaningfully give back to their community

Session 3: Active Engagement at UTM

  • This session will assist students in recognizing involvement outside of the classroom, opportunities at UTM, and service-learning; developing a mindset focused around the people who they are aiming to help; and exploring opportunities to engage with and meaningfully contribute to the community

Session 4: The Web, The Globe, and Your Impact

  • This session will allow students to explore the role of social media in making change; and discover how social media campaigns can make both a positive and negative impact

Session 5: Equity, Equality & Inclusion

  • This session will encourage students to explore concepts of equity, equality, and diversity; consider the circumstances and perspectives of different people; and identify how exclusion and inclusion manifest within social situations

Session 6: Believe & Achieve

  • This session will provide students with the resources to reflect upon their experience in utmLEAD and develop an action plan to get involved in the multiple opportunities available on campus.
