UTM International PhD Scholarship Program

Purpose

The UTM International Ph.D. Scholarship will assist graduate units by increasing the number of international Ph.D. students admitted to programs. In addition, the scholarship will help promote graduate activity on the UTM campus. Students will be admitted to FAS graduate programs and will also engage in on-campus research activities at UTM.

Value & Duration

  • The scholarship will cover the standard funding package established by the graduate program (up to a maximum of $35,000 annually) plus a $5000 annual top-up (except in programs where the standard funding package exceeds $30,000 annually).
  • The $5000 top-up funding is renewable on an annual basis in accordance with the graduate program’s normal period of funding (e.g., for a total of 4-5 years) provided the student meets the conditions of the award. Supervisors will be required to submit to the award selection committee an annual one-page summary of UTM research activities for students to receive the $5000.
  • Nominees who are selected for the award will not count against the graduate unit’s international quota as with unit-funded spots.

Eligibility

Nominees must:

  • Be international applicants (Citizens and permanent residents of Canada are ineligible);
  • Not be currently registered in a doctoral program at the University of Toronto; and
  • Have been or will be offered admission to a full-time doctoral program beginning September 2023.

International applicants who will be supervised by faculty at any of the three campuses (UTM, St. George, or UTSC) are eligible for the award.

Nomination Process

  • Graduate units will be invited to submit nominations along with a description of the UTM research activities applicants in their programs may participate in. Nominated applicants should meet the requirements for admissions within the graduate program. Graduate units can nominate applicants to whom they have provided or expect to provide an offer of admission for September 2022 or to waitlisted applicants.
  • The nomination process will be similar to the Connaught International Ph.D. Scholarship with the same deadline (Feb. 3, 2023).
  • The nomination package for each nominee should be submitted via the online form (link also below) and will contain the following application materials: a nominating letter from the graduate unit (1-2 pages); copies of all academic transcripts; letter of intent or research proposal (may be from the candidate’s admission file); two letters of reference (letters may be from the candidate’s admission file); and nominee’s CV.

Submit a nomination package by the February 3, 2023 deadline.

Results

Shortly after communicating the first round of results to units in February:

  • The graduate unit will be provided with an official award offer addressed to the successful candidate, including the terms and conditions of the scholarship for distribution to the applicant.
  • To accept the scholarship, the candidate must provide to the graduate unit written acceptance of both the unit’s offer of admission and of the scholarship within two weeks of the award offer letter date;
  • The graduate unit will notify Anna Reale at UTM (anna.reale@utoronto.ca) and FAS (graduatefunding.artsci@utoronto.ca) of the applicant’s response (both accepted and declined offers); and
  • If award offers are declined, offers will be extended to the next highest eligible ranked candidate on the reversion list.
