Professor Nadège Compaoré Named a BRN Faculty Fellow 3.0
Nadège Compaoré, Assistant Professor, has been named a recipient of the Black Research Network (BRN) Faculty Fellowship 3.0. The announcement was made on April 14, 2026.
The BRN Faculty Fellowship is a year-long program that provides $10,000 to support tenure- and teaching-stream faculty across the University of Toronto as they advance their scholarly work in any academic or multidisciplinary field. Fellows also serve on the Black Research Network Advisory Committee, which brings together Black-identified members at different stages of their academic careers to shape BRN programming, strengthen community partnerships, and foster collaboration across the university.
Compaoré's fellowship will support two significant research projects. Her forthcoming book draws on interviews with government, corporate, and civil society actors to re-examine the 1962 United Nations principle of Permanent Sovereignty over Natural Resources, demonstrating how extractive practices in African countries have frequently mirrored the patterns established under colonialism. Her second project turns to the history of Black self-determination in Canada, tracing the life and networks of Mifflin Wistar Gibbs, the first Black politician in British Columbia, and examining the broader currents of Black internationalism and Pan-Africanism that shaped political thought and organizing in the Canadian context.
