Tech and the City

In a city of more than 700,000 people, how do you keep citizens engaged, strengthen community and improve quality of life?

On Oct. 21, the Tech and the City innovation hackathon will tackle that question, inspire creativity and help build our community. The one-day event, held at the Innovation Complex at UTM, will bring together entrepreneurs, innovators, designers and programmers to find solutions to issues affecting our community.

“U of T Mississauga is delighted to host an event that not only encourages ideas and creativity, but strives to improve civic engagement in our great city,” says Professor Ulrich Krull, Vice-President and Principal of UTM, who will attend the hackathon. “Tech and the City is a fantastic example of how universities and cities can form dynamic partnerships that lead to innovation, entrepreneurship and a better quality of life.”

The event is supported by presenting sponsor, ESRI Canada, along with the City of Mississauga, ICUBE UTM, Sheridan College, the RIC Centre, SOTI Inc., OnX and Cisco Canada.

During the event, teams of up to five people will work on one of three challenges:

• Connecting with the Environment: Build a digital experience that monitors and alerts users about current air quality index levels (native, hybrid, web)
• Connecting Business: Create a dynamic and innovative digital experience to support Business to Business (B2B) Connections (native, hybrid, web)
• Connecting Mississauga Communities: Design and build a digital experience (native, hybrid, web) that promotes the exploration of Mississauga’s communities

The teams must conceptualize, design and present a digital experience that meets the specific challenge, while addressing the theme of building a connected and engaged city. Teams can win prizes, including sponsored accelerator program enrolment and Google Home units.
