Record-shattering Run for the Cure

This year’s CIBC Run for the Cure at the University of Toronto Mississauga shattered records, setting a new fundraising high to support the Canadian Cancer Society. And to top it all off, the UTM team has been recognized as the winner of the Canadian Top Post-Secondary Team Challenge—raising a total of $26,241.38.

“I am incredibly proud of the teamwork and generosity displayed by the UTM community,” says Professor Ulrich Krull, Vice-President and Principal. “Along with the other outstanding participants, our students, staff, faculty and alumni came together to make a truly remarkable difference in the fight to end cancer, and I felt privileged to run with our team.”

More than 2,200 people--including Team UTM’s 123 members--came to campus Oct. 1 to run, walk or cheer from the sidelines, decked out in team shirts and pink accessories. The final total shattered this year’s fundraising goal of $15,000, also garnering UTM the title of the Top Online Fundraiser.

The run/walk was the finale in a series of events that included the Pink Luncheon, Dodge for the Cure and a garage sale, organized by the UTM Run Committee: Michelle AtkinsonDebby KeownRyan CerrudoTara FaderCarla DeMarcoHelen Filipe; and Afrodite Cruz.

“I loved working with such a great team of individuals,” says Keown. “They are not satisfied with the status quo but strive to go beyond!”
