Bio

Uyen graduated with a dual degree in Environmental Studies and Business Administration with concentration in Finance from the University of Washington Seattle. Her interest in integrating sustainability concepts and practices into business models was established during her undergraduate studies and continues to be the driving force behind her career pathway. Uyen aspires to contribute to solving problems in waste management, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education on a global scale through pursuing the MScSM degree and future endeavors.

Working for Hanoi Urban Environment Company (URENCO) gave Uyen invaluable insights into the current state of, opportunities, and challenges in sorting, transporting, treating, and managing different types of wastes in Vietnam. She was directly involved in the evaluation, feasibility assessment, drafting of proposals, and presentation stages for various projects, including the waste-to-energy plants in Northern Vietnam, geogrid-reinforced retaining wall to increase landfill capacity, and environmental deodorizer extracted from avocado. Throughout this process, she developed adaptability skills and perseverance, learned to navigate the complex landscape of environmental policy and financing, strengthened her communications, technical writing, and creative thinking skills, while challenged herself to approach problems with an inclusive perspective. Coupled that with two years of experience working at the Contracts & Procurement Unit in Seattle City Light on procurement, planning for the establishment of an Enterprise Content Management system, and implementation of business process improvements honed her organizational and analytical skills, logical thinking, as well as accounting knowledge. Interning at the University of Washington Sustainability Office also equipped her with tools to help organizations and institutions benchmark and improve their sustainability involvement.

Outside of her professional interests, Uyen enjoys volunteering to give back to her community and expand her knowledge and experience. During 2020 – 2021, she participated in multiple charity trips to Ha Giang and Yen Bai -- Vietnam’s mountainous regions that are home to many ethnic minorities -- to visit and support low-income families and young children. She strongly believes in women’s rights and practices this by helping the women and young girls in her life nurture their confidence, self-esteem, and self-love. In her spare time, Uyen enjoys outdoor activities, reading, learning new skills, exploring new neighborhoods, and going to live music events.
