A particular interested of Sydney’s is consumerism and sustainability. Another passion of Sydney’s is fashion, specifically sustainable. In 2021, Sydney worked for Youth Challenged International (YCI) as a Youth Climate Leader. Sydney created and managed a project aimed to educate on sustainable fashion through social media while promoting local businesses in the Durham and Peel Regions. Her social media campaign was able to reach over 5000 people. Throughout the project, Sydney worked in challenging environments with minimal supervision where she took on a high level of responsibility. Sydney’s placement included intensive design thinking and systems-thinking training to guide her through the process of designing and growing sustainable, climate-focused ventures and projects. Sydney’s time at YCI helped her develop leadership and project management skills, including outreach and building a team. Sydney has also taken upon a leadership role at her local secondhand clothing store. Here she can develop problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills in day-to-day practice. She was able to help promote sustainable initiatives at her workplace such as only using reusable bags and taking personal responsibility to help improve the store’s waste and recycling system. Sydney wants to use the skills she has developed from her past experiences to help make other businesses more sustainable. She hopes to one day be a sustainability consultant.

Sydney is also an avid reader who enjoys reading mysteries and thrillers. She also tries her best to live a sustainable lifestyle. This includes thrifting, cooking, hiking, gardening, and exploring what her community has to offer.
