Bio

Aili Salminen completed her undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Arts Honours, majoring in Geography, from Queen’s University in 2016. She diverted from her original plan of studying economics when she was introduced to the multi-faceted nature of geography. Human and cultural geography, earth system sciences, and sustainability topics fueled a passion to have a career that positively impacts the environment, and those living in it. With a love for the environment and a knack for creative communications, she went on to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Relations from Humber College in 2017.

Aili has always been interested in causes that bring awareness to the everyday individual and influence a positive impact. Changing people’s habits that impact the environment—whether that be through strategic communications, policy, or corporate social responsibility initiatives—is her career goal.

The professional experience Aili has had has given her a unique set of skills and knowledge. Summers between university were spent as an Environmental Education Technician at a conservation area in her hometown of Sudbury, Ontario. She quickly excelled at educating students on the importance of healthy ecosystems, biodiversity and the impact of climate change, and introduced the concept of environmental stewardship to children and teenagers.

Aili completed a 5-month internship at a fast-paced, Toronto public relations agency; she was exposed to tasks of media pitching, media monitoring, event planning, RFP product research, and public relations and editorial content writing. From there, she joined a tech and healthcare startup as one of the first 5 employees as a content writer. She made meaningful contributions to the content development process and developed a natural aptitude for conversational AI dialogue creation.

Growing up in a rural town herself, Aili developed a love and respect for the natural environment. Lush forests, clean waters, protected wildlife, fresh air; these are the things she grew up with and wants to ensure are kept pristine. She enjoys kayaking, hiking, canoeing, and swimming in the great outdoors; checking off places on her travel bucket list, and staying active with yoga and athletic training.
