Admission Requirements

Quick Facts

We admit students once per calendar year and the next entry to the program will be May 2020. The application system will open in late September 2019 (exact date TBC) and our deadline will be in early January 2020 (exact date TBC). We receive approximately 175 complete applications each year and plan to admit 42 students in May 2020.

Admission Requirements - Domestic Candidates

A four year bachelor's degree in any area of biological sciences, chemistry or related fields, with a minimum "mid-B" (75%) average or higher in the last two years of study.

Quick Fact: To be more competitive, applicants should note that GPAs higher than the minimum may be, and typically are, required. The average GPA of incoming students in recent years has been in the 83%-85% range in the final two years of undergraduate studies.

In addition to academic transcripts, we also require and assess three letters of reference, your letter of intent and your CV/resume. See the "Application Materials Required" page for more information.

Tip: If your academic average in your last two years of undergraduate study is in the low end of acceptable grades (mid-B) then we may suggest you write a GRE Subject test in the biological sciences to demonstrate your academic potential to the Admissions Committee.  This will not boost or improve your GPA, however it will give an additional academic credential for the admission's committee to take in to consideration when evaluating applications. Please note that GRE and/or Subject GRE scores are NOT required for admission for domestic candidates.

Short-listed candidates will be required to participate in an on-campus interview day in February 2020. Admission interviews will be determined based on academic and personal profiles including transcripts, three letters of reference, CV and your letter of intent. Skype interviews are typically offered to out-of-province and out-of-country applicants upon request.

International Applicants - Additional Requirements

Students who have completed their studies outside Canada must submit scores for both a GRE Subject Test and English Proficiency scores (TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent).

Graduates of recognized academic institutions outside Canada should hold an appropriate bachelor's degree or its equivalent as assessed by the University of Toronto. Use the International Degree Equivalencies tool to see which international credentials are required for masters and doctoral admissions at U of T. You can find this tool at

GRE Scores: International students also need to submit GRE Subject Test scores (e.g. biology or chemistry). Applicants should select "University of Toronto Mississauga", institution code 7203. For program code, please select "Other Biological Sciences", program code 0299".

English Proficiency: If your primary language is not English, and you graduated from a non-Canadian university where the language of instruction and examination was not English, then you must demonstrate your facility in English using one of the following methods:

1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
2. Michigan English language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
4. The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE)
5. U of T School of Continuing Studies Academic Preparation course

Please note: UTM now hosts an IELTS Testing Centre on campus! For full details, including test dates, how to prepare and how to apply, please visit the IELTS at UTM webpage

You may not be required to complete an English-language proficiency test if you have completed a degree program at a university where the language of instruction and examination has largely been in English. This is at the discretion of the graduate unit to which you have applied. If you are such an international applicant, please contact MBiotech for further information. If an exemption is granted, an official statement from your institution will be required confirming the use of English as the language of instruction and examination.
