Class of 2012: Peter Cen

MBiotech Class of 2012: Peter Cen
CoFounder and Head of Mobile Development & Design - OOHLALA Mobile

Peter Cen

During his studies at the MBiotech program, Peter co-founded OOHLALA Mobile, a mobile application provider focused on education technology for universities and colleges around the world. His current role with OOHLALA is Head of Mobile Development and Design. Peter and his co-founders were recognized by Forbes Magazine's Top 30 Under 30 2015 (in education) for their achievements with OOHLALA.

Before starting OOHLALA, Peter worked at InDanio Biosciences, a biotechnology start-up based out of downtown Toronto where his role was comprised of business and technology development. This experience helped expose him to entrepreneurship and allowed him to become more connected to the MaRS Discovery District.

As part of team ViaVive in MBiotech, Peter and his teammates repeatedly tackled challenges involved at the intersect of health, technology and entrepreneurship and presented innovative and insightful solutions for the stakeholders. Their first AstraZeneca Seminar on diagnostic imaging proposed a study for the effectiveness of viewing radiological images on a mobile device. This study was later realized by radiologists at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre whom the team presented to. As a result of their performance in the first AstraZeneca Seminar, the team was given the opportunity to work with Sunnybrook in the hospital’s Sunnybrook International initiative where they created a business plan for the newly created project for the hospital.

The MBiotech experience was instrumental for Peter’s transition from an undergraduate in life sciences to the world of entrepreneurship. The exposure he gained to entrepreneurship in health and biotechnology were easily transferred to a technology start-up, especially in the early stages where pitching the business was essential to its growth.
