Why should you run?
Student executive positions are a great opportunity to enhance and demonstrate your leadership skills and to gain experiences outside of the classroom. These experiences are often highly valued by employers. Additionally, most of your responsibilities will require interaction with employees (in person, email and/or via phone). This will give you an opportunity to practice networking and build those professional relationships with business professionals. There will also be additional professional development training provided, to enhance your soft skills and professionalism. As a bonus, this society will give you the platform to build strong collegial bonds and friendships outside of a classroom setting.

Will the candidates be able to get guidance regarding promotional material and campaigning or is it their responsibility completely?
Any sort of campaigning is the candidates responsibility. The university will not be held accountable in any manner in regards to a candidate’s campaign and promotional material. See detailed campaigning guidelines posted above.

Can two candidates run together as a team?
No, the nomination process is individual. You have to run solely for a specific position and cannot team up with another candidate.
 
Can someone else nominate you as a candidate?
No, the candidates have to elect themselves. However, they will need 20 signatures from management and commerce students to show support from other students. This is to ensure that the candidates nominated are serious about the role.
 
Is there a restriction on how many of these signatures should be from each department (management and commerce)?
There are no restrictions in regards to signatures. However, there must be 20 signatures in total, consisting of both commerce AND management students.
 
How will the Department ensure that the results of elections are unbiased?
There will be a Chief Returning Officer, who has no relation to the election process and they will be assigned to ensure there is no bias. This Chief Returning Officer will be Linnet Kocheril.
 
When will the elected candidates start performing their roles?
Elected candidates will start working once elected. 
 
Is there any kind of training provided to the elected candidates?
Yes, elected candidates, as well as directors and all members of interest groups under them, will receive necessary onboarding and in-service training and guidance to ensure a smooth transition into their roles.
 
Do candidates need to be available in the summer for training?
For the training week, candidates will not have to be available for the entire summer. Depending on their position we will have 1 day training for everyone and break them into groups. We posted the weeks on the nomination form because we require flexibility during that week. It is right after exams and we felt if we waited until later, availability would be an issue.
 
What kind of experience is needed to apply for the board positions?
Minimum of 1 year of on-campus leadership experience is necessary. Leadership is defined as involvement outside of the classroom setting in a club/society/organization, despite the name of the role (such as associate/director/VP). Leadership also encompasses the ability to empower other students to get involved on campus. Examples include, but are not limited to: any position on an on-campus club or society or even work-study positions on-campus.
 
How do we ensure equitable representation between commerce and management programs?
The goal is to align as a single business group instead of as separate degree programs, breaking down the barriers between the two programs, and bring the students together to a common goal of delivering programs for everyone. As the future groups will be focused on student interests, the origin of the student and their current program will be less relevant. There will no longer be limitations placed on events based on originating programs (although there may be other participatory limitations such as previous events attended or other qualifying criteria). This will encourage students to connect with others in the different program areas while campaigning to foster more cohesiveness. The future-oriented interest groups will be open to all business programs and students will be allowed to participate in events for multiple interest areas. Additionally, there are academic changes that are currently being considered that will align the programs, and make the differences less pronounced, though the timing is yet undetermined.
 
What will happen if an executive team consists of all commerce or all management students?
Similar to the above answer, the program of origin for the executive will be less relevant. The elected representatives should be based on merit versus program. Professional development programs are planned to encourage students across both program areas to participate and be qualified for executive roles. The department will monitor students participating in the campaigning and make appropriate adjustments.  It is in the student interests in both programs to take their own initiative to become strong candidates as leadership roles are highly prized by employers. Additionally, a student interest census will be run as part of the election process to ensure that student interests are well understood. The department will validate that the plans created by the executive team align with the interests of the students across all programs. If interest areas are deemed to be under-served, then the department can intervene as appropriate.
