Networking was the name of the game at the PDLC’s first annual ‘Associate Yourself’ event. The event took place on the afternoon of January 14th, with over 18 industry-leading associations in attendance.

CPA Ontario, Mississauga Board of Trade, and Robert Half were only a few of the organizations in attendance. Companies took turns delivering informative presentations that provided students with detailed industry information. More local organizations like University of Toronto, Magnet, and Volunteer MBC extended to students the exciting ways in which they could contribute to, and get involved in their immediate surrounding communities.

Fair organizer and Department of Management’s Careers Officer, Natasha Walli, imparted valuable lessons and words of wisdom to eager job seekers. “Networking is an essential skill when finding a job,” she said. “We want to provide students with opportunities to connect with professional associations, and learn how these partners can help them advance in industry. If students walk away from the fair understanding the power of association, of making connections, then it's been a successful event.”

Company representatives were impressed and highly optimistic about future prospects for the graduates in attendance. Many sectors, including Marketing, HR, and Accounting, are expected to grow immensely over the next decade, with the proliferation of new technologies. Company associates endorsed the idea that students should get as much hands-on experience as they can, and continue to develop their face-to-face communication skills before and during their respective job-hunts.

Students walked away from the fair with a greater understanding of the importance of networking and building a useful network. Look out for more exiting networking and professional development events from the PDLC in the months to come!
