Space, science, social media: Whatever your interests, UTM has a summer course for you

Whether you’re getting ahead, catching up or just feeding your curiosity, there’s a course for you in the summer program at the University of Toronto Mississauga. 

From fashion to forensics to space to social media, UTM offers more than 300 summer courses across various disciplines, available on campus and online. 

Most courses are offered at an accelerated pace, allowing students to complete up to two credits during the summer session. Here are just a few of the options to consider as you plan your summer:

  1. AST201H5 S Exploring the Universe (online, in person and hybrid) What are the most distant regions we can observe from Earth? And what else might be out there? Consider how the universe began and evolved, and the possibility of life beyond Earth, far outside our Milky Way. 
     
  2. BIO310H5 F Physiology of Respiratory Systems (online and in person) We all do it, but how? Learn about the principles of cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and digestive physiology of animals and how they are controlled by the neural and endocrine systems.
     
  3. CCT110H5 S Rhetoric and Media (in person): Critically examine written, visual, aural and dynamic rhetoric as it pertains to communications across a range of digital and interactive media.
     
  4. ECO364H5 F International Trade (in person): Does money really make the world go around? Analyze international trade theory, comparative costs and reciprocal demands, factor reward equalization, international tariffs and customs unions.
     
  5. EDS285H5 F The Future of Ed Tech: Active Learning Classrooms and Artificial Intelligence (in person): Explore new possibilities and advancements in the world of education, from the initiation of open courseware, to the inception of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, makerspaces and the “shared economy.”
     
  6. FSC100H5 F: The Real CSI (in person): Are forensic TV shows accurate? Learn about the latest scientific developments in the field and the impact of popular portrayals on juror expectations, knowledge and misconceptions.
     
  7. ITA235H5 F: Italian Culture through Food (online): What better way to spend a summer than embracing la dolce vita? It’s buon appetito as you examine the relationship between food and questions of Italian identity and diaspora (includes optional field trips to restaurants, factories and farms). In the second session of summer, explore further with ITA233H5 S: Italian Culture through Fashion (in person).
     
  8. PHL113H5 F: Introduction to Philosophy: Persons and Value (in person): What is the meaning of life? Ponder the philosophical theories of human nature, morality, justice, the good life, freedom and responsibility. 
     
  9. SOC228H5 F Introduction to Indigenous Studies (online, in person): Develop a foundational knowledge about Indigenous history, peoples, cultures and societies in Canada.
     
  10. WRI227H5 S Social Media and Content Creation (online): Explore the growth of the web and social media, from information gathering to interactive and co-operative information/opinion dissemination, while creating and maintaining individual content creation projects.
