General

I have a dietary restriction and/or allergy that I did not declare in my application. What do I do?

Email utmabroad@utoronto.ca as soon as possible, so that we can update our records and accommodate you as best possible. We have in the past accommodated a variety of dietary restrictions and allergies. Selecting yes in this portion of the application does not impact the assessment of your application. It is only used to initiate a plan to support your participation in the international experience. 

I have a medical condition and/or disability need that may impact my ability to participate fully in the activities related to the international experience that I did not declare in my application. What do I do?

Email utmabroad@utoronto.ca as soon as possible, so that we can update our records and accommodate you as best possible. We will follow-up with a Health Clearance Form to be completed with the relevant on-campus service. Selecting yes in this portion of the application does not impact the assessment of your application. It is only used to initiate a plan to support your participation in the international experience. 

Please note: a staff member travels with each group to support your health and well-being as well as trip logistics. At any point in the process (pre, during and post trip) you are welcome to approach your staff member to ask for support.

Application periods vary from program to program, so look to the program page of the individual experience for deadlines. However, generally application for the UTM Abroad Academic Experperience are in February for participation the following academic year, and applications for Glocal Impact Projects are in September for participationg the same academic year.

What happens if I can't attend a session due to a class conflict?

Email utmabroad@utoronto.ca as soon as possible to set up alternate arrangements. Please note, not all sessions can be re-scheduled.

Forms

I'm having trouble submitting a form through the UTM Abroad Portal. What do I do?

Ensure you are doing all of the following things and try again;

  • Use Firefox or Google Chrome;
  • Use a desktop computer rather than your mobile device;

  • You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to print the application form. Adobe Acrobat Reader should be installed before beginning the application process and can be downloaded here;

  • For the application process, your browser must enable cookies and JavaScript. For security reasons, your log-in session will automatically be timed-out if you have not entered data during this time;

  • Save your progress as you go by clicking "save" at the end of each section to avoid losing the information you have already entered in the form.

If the error persists, take a screenshot and email it to utmabroad@utoronto.ca with an explanation of the error.

Funding

What happens if I received funding, but can no longer participate in the international experience?

Funding is contingent on your participation in the international experience and the accompanying course. If you are no longer able to participate in either or both. You will be responsible for covering the payments required as per the Refunds and Cancellation Policies.

What do I do if my financial circumstances have changed and I need more funding?

If your financial circumstances have changed, please email utmabroad@utoronto.ca about initiating the bursary appeal process to apply for additional funding to support your participation in the international experience. 

Packing & Planning

How much money do I have to bring with me?

Flights, transportation, accommodation, meals and in-country activities associated with the course are covered in your fees. However, if you would like to buy souvenirs or additional snacks etc., then research where you are travelling to learn about average costs of common items.

Do I need to bring cash/credit card with me?

It’s always handy to come into the country with a bit of cash to switch at money changers once you arrive or some local currency if you are able to order it at your bank beforehand. It’s highly advised to have a credit card on you while abroad.

What luggage do I need (ex. Hiking backpack/suitcase/duffle bag)?

You will be advised on which to take. It’s all dependent on the travel experience you go on.

What kind of footwear do I need?

Some travel experiences will involve hiking so in that case you will need hiking boots/shoes. Other experiences will only need to have good walking shoes or sandals. You will be advised which is best to take in your predeparture sessions.

Can I bring my cellphone?

Yes, but you are responsible for it in the event that it is lost or stolen.
