Child Language and Speech Studies Lab
In the Child Language and Speech Studies (C.L.A.S.S.) Lab, we are interested in the early stages of language acquisition. Within only a few years time, children typically learn to speak their native language. But acquiring a first language starts much earlier. We examine what the initial steps infants take to accomplish this. How do they start learning the sound structure of their language? How do the mechanisms children use to recognize words develop? How do they deal with the variability in the speech signal? How do children cope with unfamiliar languages and voices? And how do they begin learning the meanings of words?
