Beyond the Buzzwords: IMI AI Club Connects Students with the Real World of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is often discussed through headlines about automation, chatbots, and futuristic technology. But what does AI actually look like in practice, and how is it already changing the way industries, organizations, and communities operate today? This year, the IMI AI Club set out to answer those questions by creating a space where students could engage with AI in a meaningful, practical, and interdisciplinary way.
Founded in 2025 to bring together students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, the club’s mission is to move conversations about AI beyond purely technical topics. Through events, discussions, and industry engagement, the IMI AI Club encourages students to explore not only what AI can do, but also how it should be developed, governed, and applied responsibly in the real world.
The club’s biggest event of this year was “AI in the Real World”, a speaker panel held on March 18 at the University of Toronto Mississauga Davis Building Council Chambers. The event welcomed more than 50 attendees from across the university community, reflecting a growing interest in how AI is reshaping careers and society. The panel brought together professionals working directly at the forefront of AI innovation, including representatives from Microsoft, Google, CIBC and IBM, alongside academic leadership from University of Toronto. Together, they offered students a rare opportunity to hear firsthand how AI is being integrated into healthcare systems, enterprise products, communication platforms, education, and business decision-making. Throughout the evening, speakers discussed the realities of building and managing AI products, the challenges of responsible implementation, and the importance of balancing innovation with trust, transparency, and human oversight. Students also gained insight into the evolving skill sets needed for future careers, including adaptability, critical thinking, communication, and the ability to work across disciplines.
One of the most valuable aspects of the event was its accessibility. Rather than focusing only on coding or technical development, the conversation highlighted that AI impacts nearly every field from business and policy to healthcare, law, marketing, and operations. This helped students from many backgrounds see how they could contribute to the future of AI, regardless of their area of study. The evening concluded with an audience Q&A session, followed by networking and dinner, where students had the chance to continue conversations directly with speakers and peers. For many attendees, it was an opportunity not only to learn, but also to build connections with professionals actively shaping the future of technology.
In addition to its flagship speaker event, the IMI AI Club also hosted three student-led discussion sessions throughout the year. These smaller, interactive gatherings focused on some of the most pressing questions surrounding artificial intelligence today, including AI liability and ownership, ethical decision-making, and the broader societal impact of emerging technologies.
Unlike traditional lectures, these sessions were designed to be collaborative and discussion-based. Students were encouraged to share perspectives, challenge assumptions, and examine real-world case studies involving bias, accountability, privacy, and governance. By bringing together voices from different disciplines, the sessions reflected the reality that the future of AI cannot be shaped by technologists alone. As interest in artificial intelligence continues to grow, the IMI AI Club has demonstrated the value of creating spaces where students can engage critically, ask questions, and connect classroom learning to real-world developments. By combining industry insight with open dialogue, the club has helped foster a campus community that is not only excited about AI, but thoughtful about its responsibilities as well.
